Bevat naast de plaatpremière van het 5de strijkkwartet ook o.a. een uitvoering de halve eeuw oudere Sonate voor cello en piano. "Elliott Carter's Cello Sonata (1948), marked a breakthrough for the composer. In it, he moved decisively away from his former Copland-influenced populist style towards a more academic and personal one. It utilizes devices that would recur often in his later work: metric modulation, complex relationships of tempo deployed to achieve continuity, subtle thematic and harmonic transformations, and most notably the assignment of a certain character to each instrument. Here, a passionate cello opposes a coldly logical piano; though the two occasionally come together, they never really resolve their differences. The Fifth String Quartet is Carter's self-proclaimed "farewell" to the explorations of the previous 4. Its 12 movements require players to quickly change moods and characters while maintaining the flow from movement to movement, each of which lasts less than 2 minutes." (allmusic)
