Symfonie Nr 2; De Zaporozje Kozakken (1995)

"Although Glière's Second Symphony has never attained the popularity of his Third, it is nevertheless one of the composer's more important works. Cast in four large movements, it exudes Glière's characteristic Russian style and conservative expressive language. "The Zaporozhy Cossacks", conceived as a symphonic poem in 1921, was revised five years later and turned into a ballet-pantomime. The piece celebrates the indomitable spirit of independence and courage of the Cossacks. The musical material is based on several folk melodies of the Ukraine." (Robert Cummings / Hector Bellman, Allmusic)
