"The Clerks' Group again earn our gratitude by heading straight for the top-class works that lack modern, top-class recordings. they are going for the music, and that has to be good. This is particularly the case in the most welcome novelty here, the Liber generationis, Josquin's setting of the genealogy from St Matthew's gospel: one of the oddest text choices in the motet repertory. Since the text is mostly 'x autem genuit y, y autem genuit z,' etc, the problem of performing its full 12 minutes (even in this fairly brisk reading) is largely musical. They accept the challenge with relish. Since there has been no previous professional recording of the piece, no sensible comparisons can be drawn.
