"Een zoetgevooisder Purcellzanger dan countertenor Michael Chance is nauwelijks denkbaar. De 58-jarige Brit krijgt in zijn vijftien vertolkingen van diverse, meestal uit grotere werken afkomstige liederen een honingzoete, maar soms frappant pinnige onderstreping van theorbe-speler Nigel North en zijn andere twee begeleiders. Het repertoire hoort grotendeels tot de canon, zoals If music be the food of love en Music for a while. Een aantal liederen is gebaseerd op een ground, een telkens herhaalde baslijn, en het blijft fascinerend wat voor verschillende wendingen de harmonicus Purcell hieraan weet te ontfutselen."
