Opname: 2009. - Werken van deze CD worden door dit ensemble gespeeld op het Festival Oude Muziek 2015 in Utrecht. "De Napolitaan Nicola Matteis trok rond 1670 naar Engeland. Hij was de eerste echte vioolvirtuoos die ze in Londen hoorden. Virtuoze Italiaanse vioolmuziek circuleerde daar wel, maar de strijkers waren er gewend om in kalm tempo hun ensemblepartijen te spelen. Matteis verblufte het Londense publiek met dubbelgrepen en razendsnelle variaties. Hij moet een merkwaardige manier van spelen hebben gehad. Zijn viool hield hij tegen zijn ribbenkast gedrukt en hij speelde met een ongewoon lange strijkstok. Als componist heeft hij vnl. voor viool geschreven en de weerslag van zijn virtuoze kunsten vinden we in de 2 delen Ayres for the violin waaruit Amandine Beyer, soliste/ensembleleidster van Gli Incogniti, heeft geput. Als we deze muziek vergelijken met hoe Engelsen in de 17de eeuw voor strijkinstrumenten hebben gecomponeerd, kunnen we ons voorstellen hoeveel indruk Matteis heeft gemaakt."
