Lalo ; Saint-Saëns Cello Concertos ; Fauré : Elégie (Lynn Harrell; Chailly) (1986)

'Harrell plays Lalo's Intermezzo with a yearning intensity, while at the same time he refines his timbre to bring to it an elegiac quality too. (...) What makes the Decca issue especially attractive is the inclusion of a third work (another CD debut), the orchestral version of the Faure Elegie, played with admirable refinement. Indeed, it is difficult to imagine this performance being bettered. The Decca recording was made in the Church of Jesus Christ, Dahlem, Berlin (where many pre-1970s Karajan recordings were also made).
