"Cool" combines three different layers of recordings made by Don Cherry during the blossoming of his organic fascination with aboriginal and ancestral musical traditions. "Amejelo," "Bamboo Night," and "Smiling Faces Going Places" were pulled from the Mu session of August 22, 1969, and consist of multi-instrumental duets with percussionist Ed Blackwell. "Blue Lake" and "East" come from a beautiful session that took place on April 22, 1971, with South African bassist Johnny Dyani and Turkish percussionist Okay Temiz. "Orient" is a portion of an extended ritual conducted on August 11, 1971, with Cherry's wife, Mocqui, operating a tamboura while Dutch percussionist Han Bennink improvised on various instruments including the accordion".
