"Harold Farberman recorded 20 or so symphonies by Michael Haydn with the Bournemouth Sinfonietta in the mid-1980s. Some came out on the Vox label; the remainder are at last being rescued by Regis. Two volumes are out so far, both revealing Mozart's older colleague to have been adept at the dynamic, vivacious Italianate style favoured in Salzburg in the 1760s to '80s. There are echoes of the Mannheim style in some of the opening movements and shades of lyrical Mozart himself in certain slow movements. The pithy spirit of Joseph Haydn is quite naturally the guiding force, though; and there are some exquisitely turned solo moments, not to mention some ecstatic horn-writing" (Arkivmusic)
