Orpheus I Am (1991)

"This is a fine production dating from 1991 with an exceptional group of performers, including (still) the best early music bass voice: Harry van der Kamp, the Hilliard's John Potter, the very excellent Barbara Borden and David Cordier. In addition to which, we are treated to Anew-Laurence-King, Erin Headley, Paul O'Dette and Stephen Stubbs himself of course, able supported by Ursula Wiess, Mika Suihkonen, Sirkka-Llisa Kaakinen. The recording quality and acoustic are perfect. Furthermore this is rarely performed repertoire (undeservedly so) by William Lawes and Robert Johnson, spanning theatrical, masque/antimasque styles and including music of exceptional beauty and charm. The combination of two violins, viols, theorbo, harp, and archlute timbres is perfect, and imaginatively varied, including unusual use of this combination (with violins and viols) of which one would like to hear more on the Lawes instrumental pieces. This is a triumph of a disk. Highly recommended." (Amazon)
