"The three-quarters Belgian Spiegel Quartet -- first violinist Elisa Kawaguti is Japanese while the rest are all Belgian -- is the ideal ensemble to realize the quartets of César Franck and Ernest Chausson. The reasons for this go beyond the fact that Franck was himself Belgian and that, as his pupil, Chausson drew sustenance from the same music as well. The more pertinent reason is that the Spiegel Quartet is sweet-toned but clear, passionately argued but lucid, and deeply felt but not sentimental -- all qualities both these late Romantic works need to succeed."
