Fillmore East, NY. 1971 - Plus Early Studio Recordings (2017)

"Of the electric blues titans that once stalked the earth, Albert King was among the mightiest, coaxing string-bent lyricism from his guitar, adding future standards to the music’s songbook for rock to plunder. Following Stax’s reissue of King’s 1967 milestone Born Under A Bad Sign, this set starts with three tracks from the Fillmore East set that opened Retroworld’s 2014 Live In The 70s collection; an epic Blues Power, Crosscut Saw (the 40s delta blues King revamped with Afro-Cuban groove) and the soaring album highlight Personal Manager. This CD of two distinct halves is completed by 14 earlier sides recorded for King Records, previously roped together on his 1963 debut album The Big Blues, including hit Don’t Throw Your Love On Me So Strong and some sublime examples of his overlooked talent for writing evocative blues lyrics, such as Had You Told It Like It Was (It Wouldn’t Be Like It Is). All very good but it would be great to hear that whole Fillmore set one day." (recordcollectormag.com)
