This Ain't The Way You Go Out (2024)

"In 2023, Rose accepted an offer from Paul Weller to record in his studio in Surrey; in the meantime, she accepted an offer to fly to New York to work with rapper/producer Logic. From him she took the concept of 'open creativity', a philosophy of both involving and trusting those around you in the recording process. Although admittedly well-rehearsed before entering the studio, this resulted in the more immediate, jazzy spirit of "This Ain't the Way You Go Out". Seasoned with modern production techniques and club jazz as well as '70s singer/songwriter influences, the album goes on to surprise not only with its lively accompaniment on the more fully arranged songs, but with digressions toward trip-hop on songs like "Whatever You Want" and "The Racket." Rose is still at her best on the more intimate balladry, such as on highlights "Dusty Frames," with its rippled, watery effects, and the title track. Nothing here, though, is a misfire, as Rose deftly navigates these new approaches." (Allmusic; 4 uit 5 sterren)
