"When Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman formed The Flying Burrito Bros, they created one sublime album and a brand. It turned out to be a strong and enduring brand, considering it was based on such an apparently flimsy foundation: basically a playboy junkie and a former Byrd creating new music from old sources. But clearly this appealed to some fundamental instinct and the attraction has grown over the years. Sadly, the legend outlasted the band. First, Parsons disappeared into the woozy black hole surrounding Keith Richards. Then Hillman gave up the unequal struggle to make the band a paying proposition, bequeathing the name to soft-rocking Rick Roberts, and returnees Chris Ethridge and Sneaky Pete Kleinow, looking to revive the franchise. Anyhow, the music on both these albums is dire, apart from old songs such as "Why Baby Why or Dim Lights", "Thick Smoke (And Loud Loud Music)" – both on "Flying Again" – when Gib Guilbeau and Joel Scott Hill can exercise their proper country chops."
