Alec Wilder (1907-1980) studeerde in zijn jonge jaren weliswaar klassieke compositieleer en contrapunt maar leerde vooral zichzelf het compositievak. Een eigenzinnige vermenging van klassiek, jazz en populair (met titels als Neurotic goldfish - This is my husband - Blackberry winter) uitgevoerd door een aanvankelijk selecte, maar uitstekende groep musici waaronder Frank Sinatra - Tony Bennett - Peggy Lee - Keith Jarrett - Stan Getz. Vertolkingen overigens die Wilder soms hevig teleurstelden. Hij liet Peggy Lee weten haar improvisatie op het eind van While we're young op z'n zachts gezegd niet te kunnen waarderen en adviseerde haar "The next time you come to the bridge [of the song]: jump!".
