Emily Wilde, een professor in Cambridge gaat voor de afronding van haar proefschrift over faeries naar Hrafnsvik, een plaats in Noorwegen. Ze ontdekt er fae en maakt daar notities van in haar dagboek. Dit dagboek (inclusief wetenschappelijke voetnoten) is het verslag van haar bevindingen gedurende de tijd dat ze in Hrafnsvik is. Al vrij snel komt haar mannelijke collega haar ongevraagd assisteren. Ze is bang dat hij straks met de eer gaat strijken. Er zijn veel magische verwikkelingen en haar collega blijkt zelf een fea te zijn met magische toverkrachten. Emily weet veel van de fae en kan ermee praten, ze besluit een ijskoning te bevrijden uit zijn boom, dat wordt bijna haar eigen ondergang.
