Hij werd maar liefst 101, Irving Berlin (1888-1989), de songwriter die zoveel heeft bijgedragen aan The American Songbook. Zijn werkelijke naam is Israel Isidore Baline maar omdat zijn naam bij zijn eerste publicatie verkeerd werd gespeld is het I. Berlin geworden. Hij was een van de weinigen grote Broadwayschrijvers die voor zowel de tekst als de muziek van een lied verantwoordelijk was. Ironisch genoeg kon Berlin zelf nauwelijks pianospelen of noten schrijven. Hij dicteerde zijn werk aan zijn muziektechnisch begaafdere medewerkers. Een self-made man, kind van Joods/Russische emigranten, die al heel vroeg zijn eigen kostje bij elkaar moest scharrelen met baantjes als krantenverkoper en straatmuzikant. Hij groeide uit tot een beroemdheid vanwege liedjes als White Christmas, There's no business like showbusiness, How deep is the ocean, Putting on the Ritz, Anything you can do en Alexander's ragtime band. Na een geflopte musical in 1962 hield hij het voor gezien. De aansluiting bij de nieuwe trends als rock 'n roll kon hij niet vinden.
