Toch stammen de meeste van deze stukken uit de middeleeuwse Chinese dynastieën, toen muziek werd genoteerd door monniken en aristocraten. Dat de Chinese muziek van weleer vaak verrassend modern klinkt, is mede te danken aan de fantasierijke bijdrage van Wu Man en - hier en daar - het Kronos kwartet, die vrijelijk hun eigen invulling geven aan de verstilde en krijgshaftige melodieën." "Het nieuwe album van ud-speler Mehmet Polat, "Roots In Motion", zet de lijn door die hij met "Embodied Poetry" inzette. Met de maat- en tempowisselingen maakt de componist het zijn kwartet niet makkelijk, maar muzikaliteit blijft bij alles voorop staan. Een mooi voorbeeld hiervan is "My playground", waarin speelsheid het wint van de eveneens aanwezige indrukwekkende instrumentbeheersing. Polat haalt zijn muzikale informatie nog steeds uit diverse bronnen, met naast zijn Turkse roots ook de flamenco en de Indiase muziek. Het eerste horen we in de ritmiek van het titelstuk, en in het opzwepende "Aspiration" zit de raga "Puriya" verwerkt. In twee tracks nodigde Polat gasten uit. Violiste Vera van der Bie schittert in het ritmisch lastige materiaal van "Woodfire" en de Syrische cellist Qusai Naim weet de luisteraar diep te raken met zijn bijdrage aan "Repose". Het maakt van "Roots in Motion" wederom een krachtig statement van een ud-speler en componist met een enorme diepgang." (Jazzflits)

""Homeland" is peppered with guest artists, and the whole thing is a beautiful, celebration of life and place. The very spirit and scope on display epitomises Seckou’s approach to music as an art form inviting everybody to connect with it. Seckou packs a lot into these twelve tracks and thirty-five minutes, resulting in a lean and sharp set. There is a lot to unpack here; Seckou is a generous musician, and with "Homeland", he treats us to many cultures, sounds and musical styles. A point of note, however, is that at the beating heart of the album is the kora, a West African harp-lute. Having been born into the griot tradition (a West African bard or storyteller) and trained by his grandfather and uncles from the age of seven, it is fitting that "Homeland" begins and ends with pieces in the griot style. It’s clear from this wonderful first chapter that Seckou is here to take us on a musical journey and it’s one I would urge you to join. Music this joyous and full of pathos is irresistible." Her CV includes interpretations of early music, throat singing, composing for video art and improvisations with Can’s Damo Suzuki. Her new album with Greek jazz ensemble and long-term collaborators Primavera En Salonica and Tunisian singer Lamia Bedioui is a global tour of traditional songs about water: how it can be balm and curse, source of life and storm. "Watersong" begins beautifully, in Greece, with "The Song Of Klidonas". Singing of a mid-summer ritual in which girls place charms in a pot of clean water to be left outside bathed in starlight, Yannatou dusts the beautiful melody with melancholy. Traditional instruments such as Kostas Vomvolos’ qanun (an Arabic zither) and Harris Lambrakis’s ney (a Persian flute) also add drama and dreaminess. "Brahem continues his exploration of Arabic maqams, but with his three colleagues for this journey also delves deeper into Western classical music and jazz improvisation. If the music is in danger of falling into a chamber ensemble, this is cleverly avoided by use of powerful rhythmic motifs, often provided by bassist, Dave Holland. The lower register string instruments of the cello and double bass are beautifully utilised, with Lechner and Holland both displaying virtuoso techniques with strong and vibrant voices. In writing for this new ensemble, Brahem has not sought to dominate, and instead has created pieces that allow all four musicians to create freely within the confines of his written compositions. A new group and sound to explore for Brahem, as this is the first time he has featured the cello in one of his ensembles, and most agreeable it is too. It is also arguable that "After The Last Sky" is also the more satisfying and complete set, as fine as "Blue Maqams" is." (Jazz Views)

De Tunesische oud-speler vergezeld van twee Franse musici: François Couturier (piano) en Jean-Louis Matinier (accordeon). Het trio was te zien op North Sea 2005. De muziek is zó verstild dat hij eiste dat de zaal na concertaanvang niet betreden mocht worden - uniek voor North Sea. Dat was de muziek, die niet echt jazzy aandoet, ook voor North Sea. De Fransen brengen hun invloeden mee, maar overheersend blijft een Arabische sfeer in contemplatieve, ijle, bezwerende stukken.
"Your Queen Is A Reptile klinkt als hun meest gevarieerde album tot nu toe. Niet alleen in composities maar ook in ritmes. Weinig jazzalbums gehoord die zoveel percussieve drive en swing hebben. Wat een ongelooflijke energie barst er uit de speakers! De gloriërende sax van Hutchings en die dan weer als dynamisch blaasinstrument en dan als bas voortpompende tuba van Cross blijven natuurlijk het geluid van de band bepalen, maar wat zijn die ritmes toch van een heerlijke onherroepelijkheid. (...) Your Queen is A Reptile is een uitermate enerverende plaat die tot een nieuw kroonjuweel van de Britse jazz gekroond mag worden. Een album ook waar terloops een nieuwe lichting Britse jazzmuzikanten wordt voorgesteld met saxofoniste Nubya Garcia en drummer Moses Boyd als voornaamste maar waar ook oudere held Pete Wareham (Acoustic Ladyland, Polar Bear) de eer krijgt die hij toekomt".
