"'Dirty gritty soul' is dezer dagen het motto van Sven Hammond en zelden eerder was dat zo van toepassing als op de keihard knallende opener "Caesar" van deze vijfde studioplaat van de band. Zowel het gierende orgel van Sven Figee als de gruizige stem van Ivan Peroti slaan je onverbiddelijk om de oren, ondersteund door ritmesectie Joost Kroon (drums) en Glenn Gaddum Jr. (bas). En gitarist Tim Eijmaal scheurt ook een flinke duit in de zak. Het tempo zakt nadien geleidelijk, maar de intensiteit neemt nimmer af. Dit totaal doorwrochte funk-, soul- en rockkwintet is inmiddels een van de boeiendste Nederlandse podiumsensaties en de vertaling daarvan naar plaat is al even subliem. "Vier geschoolde jazzmusici formeerden bij toeval de band Bruut, die feestelijke jazz mixt met alle denkbare genres, van r&b tot metal. Met doorslaand succes. In hun zwarte pakken hebben ze de afgelopen jaren alle soorten podia veroverd. Popzalen, theaters en jazzpodia verwelkomen de Amsterdamse band graag. Maar hoe ze hun muziek moeten noemen? (...) Goed, Maarten Hogenhuis (sax), Folkert Oosterbeek (hammondorgel), Thomas Rolff (contrabas) en drummer Felix Schlarmann hebben allemaal jazz gestudeerd aan het Amsterdams Conservatorium. Maar hun opzwepende feestmuziek lijkt net zo schatplichtig aan surfmuziek, rock-'n-roll en rhythm-&-blues uit de jaren vijftig als aan jazz. 'Het is een verzameling van stijlen die we leuk vinden, dat gaat van bebop naar hardrock. We noemen het maar Bruut-muziek', zegt drummer Felix Scharmann. "This is one of organist Jimmy Smith's classic Blue Note sessions, and the first to draw attention to tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine. Recorded in 1960 with Kenny Burrell on guitar, Donald Bailey on drums, and Turrentine, the group reaches the peak of funky soul-jazz that all other challengers of the genre would have to live up to. Included on this uptempo session is a reworking of "When I Grow Too Old to Dream" (a feature for Turrentine), Turrentine's "Minor Chant," two Smith compositions, "Messy Bessie" as well as the set's notable title cut, and the CD-only bonus track, "On the Sunny Side of the Street." Strak, sterk, grauw, hees en donker, maar uitermate toonvast en loepzuiver zingt deze krokodillenjager. Een genot om naar te luisteren. De band produceert een heerlijke stuwende sound ondersteund door Jan Bangma op bas en Adam Church op drums. Typisch Hammond geluid, versterkt via de roterende en zwierende Leslys in de boxen. A modern-day icon of the B3, Joey DeFrancesco's new record pays homage to his home-town Philly. Philadelphia is widely regarded the birthplace of organ-based blues and jazz. Both Jimmy Smith and Jimmy McGriff cut their teeth in Philly, so it's also rather fitting that Joey DeFrancesco also grew up in the area, performing on organ and trumpet. "Project Freedom" is in-part dedicated to the so-called 'City of Brotherly Love's' rich organ history, and is also an expression of what the city and it's people mean to him personally: "that's where all my initial inspiration comes from," explains the multi-instrumentalist. Joining DeFrancesco are US musicians Dan Wilson on guitar and drummer Jason Brown, as well as Aussie expat Troy Roberts on tenor. It also happens to be the band's debut for Mack Avenue Records, with the quartet performing originals and a few covers (the spirtual "Lift Every Voice And Sing", Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come", and "So Near, So Far" by Tony Cromble and Benny Green). "With 2016's "Evolution", Hammond B-3 specialist Smith returns to Blue Note, his first studio album for the label since 1970. Produced by Don Was, "Evolution" is one of the most robust albums of his career. Where his previous few albums found him working in a trio format, on "Evolution", Was surrounds Smith with various small group configurations featuring a bevy of post-bop, funk, and soul-ready musicians including drummers Jonathan Blake and Joe Dyson, guitarist Jonathan Kreisberg, trumpeters Keyon Harrold and Maurice Brown, and others. Also joining Smith here are several jazz luminaries including genre-bending pianist Robert Glasper, whose glassy piano tone rubs nicely against Smith's burnished Hammond warmth on "Play It Back." Similarly, saxophonist Joe Lovano joins in on several cuts. Over "Grantstand": "Green's third album teams the clear-toned guitarist with an unlikely backing group: tenor saxophonist Yusef Lateef (who doubles on flute), organist Brother Jack McDuff, and drummer Al Harewood. Lateef's playing here is pretty straightforward and swinging, fitting this relaxed, bop-tinged soul-jazz." Over "Sunday Morning": "Green's fourth album was the first time Green recorded (as a leader) with a piano instead of an organ. Joined by pianist Kenny Drew, bassist Ben Tucker, and drummer Ben Dixon, this is less of a soul-jazz session, instead turning in a solid set of modal hard bop and laid-back grooves."
"Compared to his earlier Blue Note recordings, organist Jimmy Smith's outings for Verve are not as strong from a jazz standpoint. Certainly his renditions of the "Theme from Joy House," "The Cat," and the "Main Title from The Carpetbaggers" are not all that significant. However, this set has some tasteful arrangements for the big band by Lalo Schifrin, and some good playing by the great organist on a variety of other blues-oriented material.
