Op twee na zijn alle groepsleden vrouw (en de twee mannen zijn broers van een van de vrouwelijke leden). Ze komen uit een vissersdorp aan de noord-westkust van Santiago, het grootste eiland. De Banda Linda is een kleine stam die in de Centraal-Afrikaanse Republiek leeft. Ze staan bekend om hun typische muziekstijl, met lange houten pijpen die een enkele toon produceren. De Italiaanse componist Luciano Berio omschreef de gemeenschap als 'zeer muzikaal'.
Opnamen van de muziek die Indiase slangenbezweerders gebruiken. Het instrument dat hiervoor bij uitstek gebruikt wordt is hier uitgebreid te horen: de 'been' of 'murli' of 'pungi'. Dit is een instrument met twee fluiten die uitkomen in een reservoir dat is gemaakt van een gedroogde kalebas. Het instrument wordt zonder pauzes bespeeld, waarbij de muzikant gebruik maakt van circulaire ademhalingstechnieken. Op de CD horen we ook percussie-begeleiding en door dansers gemaakte ritmische geluiden.
"Tanjore is a city of over 200,000 inhabitants in southern India's Tamil Nadu State. Situated along the banks of the Kaveri (Cauvery) River, Tanjore (or Thanjavur) sits in one of India's most fertile agricultural regions. Highly regarded for its paintings, jewelry, inlaid copperware, silk brocades, and carpets, Tanjore is also recognized as a center for the unique and venerable poetic song form Padam. On this CD, the Carnatic diva Aruna Sairam gives voice to this song form. Sung as an accompaniment to the precise and exacting South Indian dance Bharatanatyam, the Padam is deliberate, slow, languid, sensual, and evoking of distinct moods associated with love. Accompanied by a violinist and players on mridangam (double-sided hand drum), tampura (drone instrument), and ghatam (clay pot), Sairam recorded this album in order to pay homage to her Tanjore "style masters" and to raise awareness about the fact that Padam, for a number of reasons, is teetering on the verge of extinction." The group was lead by a duo consisting of brothers Ghulam Farid Sabri & Maqbool Ahmed Sabri who are honorary mentioned as Shahenshah - E - Qawwali (the Ultimate King Of Qawwali). Sabri Brothers were the first ever Sufi Qawwali artists to introduce Qawwali music to America & other western countries, They are considered as one of the greatest Qawwali Artists of all times." "After the rush of miners to the urban centers of South Africa at the end of the 19th century, some Zulu music, long played on musical bows, was transferred to a new instrument -- guitar. The entertainment usually took place in the single-sex hostels where the miners lived. These tracks were recorded in 1988 and 1996 in Durban, South Africa in such a single-sex hostel. This really is roots music, from the comb and concertina duet of "Kam and Kossetina" to "Gumboot 1996," which is fairly self-explanatory. Guitar plays an understandably major part, with both Albert Nene and Blanket Mkhize offering solos, while more ensemble-oriented pieces like "Gumboot 1993" team guitar with accordion and violin. It's not professional music; these are people playing for recreation, and without thinking carrying on something that's a new tradition. It's fascinating stuff, without a doubt, an insight into something most listeners never even knew existed -- and it's thoroughly enjoyable, too." (Allmusic)
"The Hadza Bushmen is a hunter and gatherer group from the east African rift valley of Tanzania. Although Western culture has filtered in (they drive trucks to the doctor for medical assistance), they still have their own distinct click lout language, and their traditional songs and chants are still well integrated into daily life, where music is tagged to specific tasks and events. The first disc here collects field recordings of solo, duo, and trio chants and malimba (thumb piano) pieces, some with zeze (a bowed stick zither) accompaniment. The second disc consists of larger group choral chants, and features sparse but steady percussion and whistling. Although intended for scholarly and archival use, Hadza Bushmen of Tanzania has moments of simple but intricate beauty, particularly on the tracks where vocal, malimba, and the zeze fiddle are combined."
