Onder de titel ‘The Golden Years Of Dutch Pop Music’ is een serie compilaties van Nederlandse bands uitgebracht die in de jaren zestig, zeventig en tachtig baanbrekend. Op de albums staan namelijk steevast alle originele A- en B-kanten van de singles in chronologische volgorde, waar mogelijk aangevuld met relevante albumtracks. Veel van deze songs verschenen nooit eerder op cd – laat staan dat ze digitaal beschikbaar waren. Daarover het gaat op deze Golden Age Of Dutch Pop Music-dubbelaar. Die stopt in 1969, net voor de toetreding van drummer Cesar Zuiderwijk en de naamsverandering. The Golden Earrings hebben er dan al vier jaar aan de top van de Nederpop op zitten. Ze gaat zich pas echt onderscheiden van de andere beatbands als eerste zanger Frans Krassenburg in 1967 wordt vervangen door Barry Hay. De in India geboren Hagenaar speelt vloeiend Engels. ""On The Double", Golden Earrings very first double album, was released in April 1969, after the band had been working on it for about a year. This expanded edition includes four bonus tracks: the single "Dong-Dong-Di-Ki-Di-Gi Dong", with its B-side "Wake Up-Breakfast", which gave the group its very first number one hit in July 1968. For the first time, the original stereo mixes of both tracks have been released. The single "Where Will I Be", with the B-side "It’s Alright, But I Admit It Could Be Better", was recorded by the group in New York City in May 1969 and marked the very last recording the band made with drummer Jaap Eggermont. All tracks have been 24 bit/192 kHz remastered from the original master tapes. This expanded CD edition of "On The Double" is the seventh instalment in a special series of remastered & expanded albums by Golden Earring, overseen by Red Bullet catalogue and band archivist Wouter Bessels. "In 2020 kwam de EP "Life And Life Only", vier jaar later is er een volwaardig debuutalbum, "One Of A Kind". Treffende titel, want zoals The Heavy Heavy hoor je er niet veel. Tenminste, anno 2024 niet. Want de soulvolle rock klinkt alsof je in één keer terug gekatapulteerd bent naar de sixties. Gooi The Mamas And The Papas, The Byrds, Jefferson Airplane en een snufje Rolling Stones in de blender en je hebt een beeld van de vintage sound van The Heavy Heavy. De stemmen van Turner en Fuller klinken samen als een klok en het gitaarspel van Turner is lekker gruizig. Hun muziek klinkt dan op het eerste gehoor wel alsof het een halve eeuw geleden gemaakt is, toch weten Fuller en Turner er met hun gepassioneerde voordracht het te laten klinken alsof zij deze sound zelf hebben uitgevonden. "Some good things remain known only to the selected few, or those lucky enough to stumble upon them. Maybe Canterbury via South London or vice versa quartet Spygenius want it that way, maybe not (more likely), but their band name reflects the current disparity between the quality of their music and the fact that their name is probably not so recognizable to a wider audience. Maybe their latest album Jobbernowl will rectify that numskull or no numskull that the album title refers to. Peter Watts (frontman and guitar), Ruth Rogers (bass), Matt Byrne (keys) and Alan Cannings (drums) – and everybody sings, are definitely no numskulls themselves but a band with an obvious penchant not only for the best of the sixties pop/rock The Beatles/The Byrd style, but also the new wave purveyors like Robyn Hitchcock, Squeeze and quite a few others, and just a little touches of the famous Cantenbury prog scene scene."
