" I don't know how to praise this album enough. The 'Macs' are among the finest performers of Celtic music in the world, and are, imho, way under-appreciated. The vocals are fabulous, the harmonies heavenly, and the instrumentals tight and beatifully performed. This is my favorite Mccalman's CD. From beginning to end, every song is wonderful. There are traditional favorites like 'Twa Recruitin' Sergents' and Mac originals, and a really fun 'doo-wop' song with original Mac lyrics. For acoustical music with a powerful Celtic soul, you cannot go wrong with this CD. It is a must-have for any lover of folk music. There is a purity and cleanliness to the Mccalman's sound that I find very refreshing. " (Celtic Acoustics)|
"Anyone who has listened to the Scottish master fiddlers of our time is familiar with Paul Anderson and his fiddle sound and style: rich, robust and yet tender and ”singing”. Anderson’s Iona is a beautiful, almost spiritual, chain of mostly quite brief and low-key musical moments, with poetry written and recited by Francy Devine, appearing between tunes a few times. Paul Anderson composed the music for Iona for an art project about the life and legacy of a certain Colm Cille, who later history knows better as St. Columba. I presume this context may have immersed the artist in the actual history of the saint and the Abbey, at least the music here feels… internalized, for want of a better word, as if the story of Iona is expressed, through Paul Anderson’s mastery and persona, in music. It is truly precious. Music for your ears and your soul, whatever your faith. Bless you, Mr. Anderson." (FolkNotes)
"In 2012, two of Scotland’s favourite folk musicians, Màiri Morrison and Alasdair Roberts, released "Urstan", an album of songs in Scots Gaelic. In the intervening years, both Morrison and Roberts have been busy: Roberts is one of the most prolific collaborators in folk music as well as one of the most highly-regarded solo performers, while Morrison balances her singing career with a parallel life as an actress and playwright. Subtitled "Songs And Ballads From Nova Scotia", it came about after the pair travelled to Canada in 2023 at the suggestion of Nova Scotian musician Pete Johnston to work on a collection of songs with transatlantic roots. Many of these ten songs were originally collected by folklorist Helen Creighton and display the direct links between the history, culture and language of Scotland and eastern Canada. There is a split between Gaelic and English language songs; Morrison takes the lead on most of the former, while the latter are shared." (KLOF Mag)
"Dit is een album om absoluut in te verdwijnen. Het Ierse vocale viertal Landless brengt echo’s uit het verleden naar het heden. Zelfs na eindeloos draaien raak je verloren in overgeleverde balladen die, op een enkele uitzondering na, tot ver na vroeger terugvoeren. Liedjes vol weemoed en verlangen, mysterie en moraal; over migratie en afscheid, gewonnen en verloren liefdes. Liefhebbers van The Fairport Convention, The Pentangle en Steeleye Span zullen ervan genieten. (Mixed Worldmusic)
