"Voordat ze elkaar troffen in het Cornelia Street Cafe in smeltkroes New York, hadden ze alle drie al een behoorlijke reputatie in de jazzscene opgebouwd; de Britse saxophonist Will Vinson, gitarist Gilad Hekselman uit Israel en de in Mexico geboren drummer António Sanchez. Maar de chemie en opwinding van die eerste ontmoeting was er naar verluidt niet minder om. Zoals bijvoorbeeld de Brusselse tenorsaxofonist/zanger Nicolas Kummert, die na zijn Voices project momenteel grote sier maakt met Drifter (een kwartet met de Finse pianist Alexi Tuomarila, contrabassist Axel Gilain en drummer Teun Verbruggen die vorig jaar grote indruk maakte met debuutalbum "Flow") en eerder al onder meer samenspeelde met Yves Peeters, Victor Lazlo (Billie Holiday project) en Jef Neve. Kummert brengt nu een eerste fullalbum onder eigen naam uit. "La Diversité" heet dat album waarop de uit Benin afkomstige meestergitarist Lionel Loueke (Avishai Cohen, Herbie Hancock, Toots Thielemans,.. ) te horen is en waarmee Kummert zich naar een internationaal niveau werkt. Kummert is jong, maar hij heeft al een erg ruime geschiedenis. They are intricate and extensive, encompassing a wide sonic range: from the bellowing bass of his accordion, to the most delicate, icicle-like tinkling. That Kimmo should exploit every sound available from his accordion – the rattle of buttons, the breathy wheeze of the bellows – as well as the occasional burst of conventional squeezebox melody and snatches of a tune, is to be expected. But on Sensitive Skin he moves deeper than ever into uncharted sonic territory, backed up by fellow pioneers such as the electronics artist Tuomas Norvio, percussionist Samuli Kosminen, Arto Järvelä, who plays nyckelharpa, and his old friends, the Kronos Quartet. His guests are all deeply involved in his sound creations. There is a great deal going on in each track but, though they are packed, they are not stuffed to bursting. "Jerusalem-born pianist Omri Mor is best known for being a member of the bassist Avishai Cohen's trio from 2011. As with his fellow Israeli employer, Mor takes an organic route to the fusing of the roots music of Semitic and related cultures with those of jazz. It's an infectiously cosmopolitan mix in which folk melodies and rhythms rub up close to the spirit of collective jazz improvisation. Yet Mor's collection of originals on It's About Time (there's also a rhapsodic solo piano version of ‘You and the Night and the Music’) are essentially bound to North African Chaabi and Andalusian folk music with the ex-Joe Zawinul Algerian drummer Karim Ziad, who's the artistic director on the session, partnering the piano and bass on four tracks.
