"Commodores is een Amerikaanse soul- en funkgroep die vooral in de jaren zeventig en tachtig succesvol was. De groep scoorde haar grootste hits met Nightshift, Easy, Three Times a Lady en Sail On. Deze hits zijn ook terug te vinden op deze compilatie. Lionel Richie is vanaf het begin tot 1982 leadzanger geweest van The Commodores." (wikipedia)
"It's kind of surprising that Al Jarreau's catalog hasn't been treated with greater care. Best of Al Jarreau, released by Warner Bros. back in 1996, remains the best anthology of Jarreau's career, and the various Love Songs series put together by different labels have tended to exist merely as a way to take advantage of the Valentine's Day market (Sony BMG released a Love Songs comp for the Bay City Rollers, of all artists), but this particular Love Songs is more than something to fill the shelves, compiling many of Jarreau's biggest hits released from 1976 through 2006. Since it skips across 30 years, a number of favorites are bound to be missing -- "Your Precious Love," "Since I Fell for You," and "Moonlighting," for instance. Even so, this covers the basics rather well." (AllMusic)
"Mandrill is an American soul and funk band from Brooklyn, New York, formed in 1968 by brothers Carlos, Lou, and Ric Wilson. AllMusic called them "one of funk's most progressive outfits... with an expansive, eclectic vision." Mandrill was often regarded as one of the most experimental and progressive funk bands of the 1970s." (Wikipedia)
"'Make him do right' is zeker een van de beste drie albums van Karyn White. Het is een van de sterkste R&B releases van de 90's, maar het heeft nooit een echte hit voortgebracht. Ik denk dat 'Make Him Do Right' een van de beste geheimen is van de muziekwereld. Het album bevat zachte R&B ballades (meest geschreven en geproduceerd door Babyface), zoals 'Can I Stay With You', 'I'm Your Woman' of 'One Minute' en uptempo, funky nummers, zoals 'Simple Pleasures', 'Hungah'of 'Weakness'. Als je luistert naar dit album ontdek je de kracht en passie van Karyn White voor muziek. Het zal je hart en ziel aanraken en dat is wat goede R&B muziek is." (RateYourMusic)
"My World is one of the boldest and most imaginative to emerge from the new soul revival. Most of Fields' earlier albums have focused on his vocal resemblance to James Brown, but My World allows him to show off other aspects of his musical personality without blunting the raw and passionate edges of his vocal style. Even though Fields is clearly more than just a James Brown acolyte, he can deliver a similar degree of heat and force. The instrumental selections "These Moments" and "Expressions Theme" give the band a well-deserved opportunity to show what they can do, but it's when the Expressions lock in with Fields on strong but pleading numbers like "The Only One Loving You" and a spectral version of "My World Is Empty Without You," or more socially conscious tunes like "Money I$ King" that My World hits its highest points and Lee Fields shows himself to be one of the most compelling soul singers at work today." "This compilation, released in 1995 by BR, is an adequate survey of Imagination's often clubby urban pop, including such highlights as "Music and Lights," "Just an Illusion," "Body Talk," "Changes," "Flashback," and "In and Out of Love." They were appreciated more in their native Britain than in the U.S., and it's a shame that they didn't have more success away from home. Yeah, most of these songs sound like they were made in the '80s; perhaps that makes Imagination less "timeless" somehow, but can't you just as easily pinpoint what decade a classic Motown record was released? This compilation shouldn't be confused with another disc of the same exact title that was released by Music Club in 2000; the later disc has its advantages over this one." (AllMusic)

"Rhino's 2001 collection, The Very Best of Howard Hewett, is a terrific collection, containing a generous 16 tracks that span not only his solo hits, but "Heaven Sent You," the Stanley Clarke tune he sang lead on, plus two songs that he sang for in Shalamar ("This Is for the Lover in You," "Somewhere There's a Love"). For most listeners, this is all the Hewett that's necessary, and by adding these unofficial Hewett recordings to the repertoire, they've made this the kind of record that's essential for most of the non-dedicated Hewett fans." "Basically, Provocative is a retread of Johnny Gill, but it's a retread done right, since Gill's voice is in prime form and the dueling production teams of Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis and L.A. Reid & Babyface make the music smooth, stylish, and funky." (AllMusic)
A middle-of-the-road album that combines dance ("Tuesday Afternoon"), ballads ("Trembling"), and midtempo '70s-style pop ("Chico") all to little effect, though "Rose Colored Glasses" is quite catchy. (Allmusic.com)
"Stax, which defined and personified the heart of Deep South Memphis soul in the 1960s, collapsed in financial tatters in 1975, and the studio and office building on McLemore Avenue was torn down in 1989, but for this one night at least, the music was hot buttered and cooking again. Everything works here, from the familiar yet still magnificent grandeur of Isaac Hayes' "Theme from Shaft" to the wonderfully emotive reading of "When Something Is Wrong With My Baby" by Carla Thomas. Even ex-Doobie Brother Michael McDonald clicks on "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay," his tribute to the late Otis Redding. Booker T. & the MG's, arguably the universe's greatest soul band, turn in a blistering five-minute version of their signature song, "Green Onions," and it is one of the highlights of the evening. As a sort of living, breathing addendum to the Memphis soul scene of the 1960s, Soul Comes Home makes a wonderful testimonial, bringing the past into the present with gritty fervor." (AllMusic)
"On Deacon, he makes good on that promise and then some: serpent's second album is just as rooted in R&B and gospel as his previous music, but it's as celebratory as Blisters and Soil were aching. Though serpentwithfeet is in a markedly different emotional space than before, he sounds just as genuine and eloquent. Deacon's lightness and sense of relief is almost palpable as he sings about the pure beauty of everyday love and happiness, and the little details that fill his songs ground his joy in earthy reality.More soothing and fulfilling than thrilling, Deacon revolves around the idea that love doesn't have to be a burden. It's a realization that serpentwithfeet transforms into a beautiful, fully realized work of art for his audience to savor." (AllMusic)
