We probably would have gone with Jack Steadman and Bombay Bicycle Club, because there’s a real sense that the new album makes him the star. His acoustic guitar is the album’s anchor, with very little in the way of contribution from the other band members - but this is entirely a good thing. Like the debut, the melodies contained on the new album are its strongest point. Even the reworkings of a selection of older tracks sound fresh, their immediacy shining through even more clearly due to their bare-bones makeup. Closing with Steadman’s take on Joanna Newsom’s stunning ‘Swansea’, rejigged with an entirely new hook, and showcasing the frontman’s breathless vocals very well indeed, ‘Flaws’ is a gentle rebuke for those who had written Bombay Bicycle Club off after just one record." The band's name comes from the Vincent van Gogh painting of the same name (originally known as Le Café de Nuit). The band formed in 2014 while the members were still in secondary school, and bonded over mutual musician interests such as Title Fight and Kings Of Leon. On 8 May 2019, the band announced their debut studio album, "0151", which was released on 23 August 2019. "Holding Hands With Jamie is smerig en naargeestig. Er is geen begin, geen eind, enkel een uitzichtloos midden van duwen en trekken, van vallen en proberen op te staan – wat zelden lukt. Een schreeuw, een duik in de vissenkom, een trein die voorbij raast. ‘Spending time watching Top Gear with my trousers down’, beschrijft zanger Dara Kiely de situatie aan het begin van het album. Even later richt hij zijn woede op een kat die in de tuin van de buren kakt. Soms stelt hij lukraak vragen aan gesprekspartners die vermoedelijk enkel in zijn verbeelding bestaan. ‘Have you been eating worms?’ ‘Do you reckon Batman and Robin ever kissed?’ De vragen resoneren in de ruimte, antwoorden blijven uit. Friend Ship, more so than previous releases, trades in the syrupy 70s MOR popularised by Father John Misty – string sections, brass and horns make it a richly textured record. Samuel Flynn Scott’s sardonic wit peppers the record, with some genuine laugh out loud moments on Guru and Miserable Meal. But there’s also incredible candid moments, such as on the jazzy album highlight Tranquility. It’s a record that contains some of the group’s best song writing and arrangement, there’s only the slight mis-step of Landline that doesn’t quite fit the record’s really nuanced aesthetic.
