Experts In A Dying Field (2022)

"Without skipping a hook, third album Expert in a Dying Field delves still deeper into melancholy, with lyrics navigating a breakup as well as pandemic life. Churning fuzz and ringing lead guitar begin a downcast but nonetheless driving opening title track that asks, "How does it feel/To be an expert in a dying field?/How do you know/It's over when you can't let go?" The Beths lean on the accelerator three tracks in, on the polyrhythmic "Silence Is Golden," for instance, a song whose punky, racing rhythms and guitar histrionics are matched by a rambling, lilting vocal. Nearing the halfway point of the track list, the two-minute "I Want to Listen" is a gentler, McCartney-esque ditty with more complex chords and shifting harmonic progressions than are typical for the onetime jazz majors. The album also delivers on vulnerable, rock-solid songs, a juxtaposition the Beths continue to master." (AllMusic)

Light Up Gold ; Tally All The Things That You Broke (2013)

"Parquet Courts draw on some influences not commonly paired, but to great effect. The album manages to sound like it's learning from its influences rather than stealing directly. While still early into the group's existence, the bandmembers dubbed their sound "Americana punk," possibly referring to the open landscapes of their Texan beginnings clashing with their present urban surroundings and the unique sonic results of that juxtaposition. You can compare the feel of the band to elements of Sonic Youth, Bob Dylan, and other acts not originally from the big city. Light Up Gold captures some of the excitement and perspective on city life that only transplants could feel, and filters it through a haze of laid-back '90s alt-rock influence. The album is sometimes languid, often jittery and beaming, but mostly an almost subconsciously storytelling collection of moments that would be boring and forgettable if they weren't captured in songs so accidentally perfect." Great Thunder (2018)

Around the time Waxahatchee’s Katie Crutchfield was writing albums ‘Cerulean Salt’ and ‘Ivy Tripp’, she was also working on songs for her now-dormant experimental recording group Great Thunder, alongside Keith Spencer of Swearin’. Some of those songs faded into obscurity, until now, being resurrected and given new life in Waxahatchee’s new EP ‘Great Thunder’. The EP marks a return to Katie’s folk roots with six stripped-back, solo tracks that have a warm and intimate feel. Frequent new set opener ‘Chapel Of Pines’ is finally committed to recording, given a sparse, eerie recording that gives Katie’s voice plenty of room to breathe. ‘Singers No Star’ is a sparse, piano-driven number whereas ‘You Left Me With An Ocean’ is a short but sweet, haunting take on heartbreak. A quieter, more intimate experience than last year’s ‘Out In The Storm’, this is an offshoot of Waxahatchee that may fail to bring in fans anew, but offers plenty for those wanting a return to Katie Crutchfield’s more acoustic roots.
