While I was listening to this record, there wasn’t much that I noticed when it came to Pitbull’s lyricism — He’s not a good lyricist by any means, as this record is more about having a good time." "Er leek iets in de lucht te hangen, toch kwam het zesde album van wellicht de beste rapper ter wereld, Kendrick Lamar als een verrassing. "GNX" is met drie kwartier betrekkelijk kort en klinkt pakkender dan zijn vorige album. De sound die op heel "GNX" wordt vastgehouden is die van de West Coast uit de jaren negentig die met zompige synths en vloeiende baslijnen wordt doorgetrokken naar het heden. Lamar brengt niet alleen een ode aan het verleden, met in "Reincarnated" opnieuw verwijzingen naar zijn grote idool Tupac. Ook introduceert hij een hele stoet jonge rappers uit Compton (Los Angeles), waar hij zelf opgroeide. Naast SZA die in twee liedjes fraaie vocalen levert, heeft Lamar verder geen grote namen nodig voor zijn verhaal. In het slotnummer "Glory" heeft hij je toch weer te pakken. "Op zijn twaalfde album, "The Death Of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce)", neemt Eminem definitief afscheid van het duistere en respectloze alter ego dat hem in het verleden veel kritiek opleverde. Helaas is de uitvoering niet altijd even bevredigend. Op een aantal nummers vecht Eminem overduidelijk tegen Shady en zijn smaakloze uitingen, maar op een nummer als "Road Rage" is onduidelijk of het niet Eminem zelf is die een aversie heeft voor transgenders en mensen met een hoog gewicht. Maar "The Death Of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce)" is wisselvallig en klinkt regelmatig als oud werk, opener "Renaissance" komt uit de tijd van "Encore" (2004) en "Houdini" is net "Without Me" uit 2002. Een derde van de negentien nummers had, net als Shady, een genadeklap (vertaling van Coup de Grâce) mogen krijgen. Het zou fijn zijn als de talentvolle rapper na Shady’s dood ruimte heeft voor nieuwe onderwerpen." (Het Parool)
