Tremblers And Goggles By Rank (2022)

"Tremblers and goggles by rank falls very much into the latter camp, with a tendency for longer, more discursive songs (closer Who Wants to Go Hunting clocks in at an unprecedented six minutes), their unpredictable twists and turns interspersed with lyrical non sequiturs (“I wear my shirt out/ I want you to see my clown”) and a wealth of gorgeous hooks. Cartoon Fashion (Bongo Lake) is particularly fine, as is the early Who-inspired Goggles By Rank. Roosevelt’s Marching Band, however, plods unspectacularly and while Alex Bell doesn’t want for ideas (or false endings), not all of them are actually good. As an album, it never comes close to Guided By Voices at their mid-90s peak; it isn’t even the best one by this incarnation of the band (that’s possibly 2019’s Warp and Woof). But this is yet another solid addition to one of the most impressive canons in US indie rock." (Theguardian.com)

The Tourist (2017)

“Immaculately produced – it is the cleanest Clap Your Hands Say Yeah album yet – and full of Alec Ounsworth’s trademark yowl, ‘The Tourist’ represents only a limited sort of journey. Alec seems newly interested in the shape of his lyrics, often putting words together in rapid-fire, delivery, like the crackling aside “tough luck motherfucker” on ‘A Chance To Cure,’ just for the sound of it. Elsewhere, he grows conservative and derivative, such as on the wide-open ‘Better Off’. One of the record’s standouts, penultimate track ‘Ambulance Chaser’ places a bright acoustic guitar against a synthesizer – a pretty, yet predictable move. On ‘Ambulance Chaser,’ he sings, “I’ll take my medicine, you just hope for the worst.” If Alec Ounsworth didn’t know where he was headed a few years ago, he – and we – are more certain of his direction now. ‘The Tourist’ isn’t ‘the worst’, but it’s far from the journey its designer hopes it to be.” (DIY mag)

What's That Sound? (2016)

“After two albums as Deptford Goth, Daniel Woolhouse drops the mask and comes out as his real self, signing "What’s That Sound?" under his own name. This renewed sense of self is tangible in the music, too: the detached essentiality of Deptford Goth’s electronica has now been replaced with a choral and full sound, winking to gospel and soul more than to beats and computers. The only continuity between the two different approaches is being the slow and dilated "Map On the Moon", a singularity within the album, especially if compared to the title track’s catchiness and rhythm. Introspection has never been something Woolhouse subtracted to, but this time the drive underneath his songwriting seems to be sharing and letting all his feelings out into the light, rather than reflecting silently in the darkness. Woolhouse should be applauded for that. The sound’s consistency turns into a distracting flatness after a while, leaving "Graffiti" and "Tomorrow’s Egg" to do all the hard work.” (Loud And Quiet)

Original Album Series (2013)

"10,000 Maniacs have one of the most misleader monikers in popular music. From their name, you’d expect speed metal or punk, but instead, they’re a folk-rock band with socially conscious lyrics and Natalie Merchant’s oddly mannered vocals. This is the collection of their five best albums." (Aphoristic Album Reviews)
