"In een tijdperk waarin reggae steeds vaker wordt uitgekleed tot zielloze dancehall-beats, komt het album "Timeless Roots" van veteraan Horace Andy en bassist Jah Wobble als een verfrissende muzikale thuiskomst. "Het nieuws kwam als een donderslag bij heldere hemel. Terence ‘Astro’ Wilson, de zanger/toaster/trompettist/medeoprichter van UB40 was na een kort ziekbed op 64-jarige leeftijd overleden. Het noodlot voltrok zich net nadat het vierde album van UB40 was ingeblikt, waardoor er nu toch nog een plaat is waarop de man met het donkere stemgeluid te horen is. Op "Unprecedented" pakt de rossige leadzanger uiteraard de hoofdrol, maar krijgt Astro gelukkig hier en daar ook de ruimte om wat tegenwicht te bieden aan Campbells zoetgevooisde stemgeluid. Als subtiele achtergrondzanger op het onschuldig schuifelende "We’ll Never Find Another Love" bijvoorbeeld, maar ook als toaster die het eindstuk van het meer rootsy klinkende titelnummer domineert. Met "Do Yourself A Favour" hobbelt er af en toe ook een scherper klinkend reggaeliedje door het vrij gezapige geheel. Het zorgt ervoor dat "Unprecedented" een enigszins waardig afscheid is geworden." "Damian Jr. Gong Marley, de jongste zoon van reggae-legende Bob Marley, ontpopte zich in 2005 tot een interessante nieuwe loot aan de stam met de CD "Welcome To Jamrock", waarop hij reggae met hiphop vermengde. Bob Marleys oudste zoon Ziggy Marley is minder experimenteel aangelegd. Toch is "Love Is My Religion" (2006) een fijne zomerplaat. Deze tweede solo-CD van Ziggy is een lichtvoetig reggae-album, dat zich onderscheidt door de veelzijdige instrumentaties en lieve teksten. Ziggy toont zich in zijn teksten een wat verlaat bloemenkind, die odes brengt aan de liefde en de vriendschap : Before I met you, I was real low. Now everyone know, now that I know you hey Im real high, zingt hij in Friend." "The Gladiators were not only one of the few finest reggae harmony groups of the 1970s; they were also, somewhat unusually, an almost self-sufficient instrumental ensemble. Lead singer Albert Griffiths was an accomplished lead guitarist, and harmony singers Clinton Fearon and Gallimore Sutherland played bass and rhythm guitar. Although they seemed to operate somewhat in the shadow of the sweeter-voiced Mighty Diamonds and were not quite as prolific, The Gladiators nevertheless made about as many really fine records as their closest competition, and the ones they made for Virgin's Front Line are among their best. "Proverbial Reggae" finds them augmented instrumentally by members of the legendary Revolutionaries studio band, and includes such classic Griffiths compositions as "Best Things In Life," "Jah Works," and the strangely catchy "Stick A Bush," a song whose inscrutable chorus has been parsed nearly to death in worldwide reggae discussions. Na de opsplitsing van de band, hadden we ineens twee UB40's. De toevoeging van de namen Ali, Astro en Mickey moest dan maar duidelijkheid verschaffen. "A Real Labour Of Love" is een vervolg op de eerdere succesalbums van de band: een 16-tal covers gestoken in het bekende UB40-jasje, zoals "A Place In The Sun" en "Here I Come." (GT, Muziekbank)
Putumayo have always made unlikely and unorthodox choices when it comes to compilations; that's a big part of what makes their releases so much fun. Not everyone on African Reggae is a full-time reggae artist, but all of the selections--from straight-ahead roots reggae to reggae-influenced African pop--at least employ some type of reggae beat. Putumayo focuses exclusively on Sub-Saharan Africa/Black Africa, spotlighting artists from Nigeria, South Africa, Cape Verde, Ghana, Burkina Faso (formerly Upper Volta), Guinea-Bissau, and the Ivory Coast--and the fact that there is such an impressive diversity of artists south of the Sahara allows Putumayo to assemble a compilation that is unpredictable yet remains true to its basic theme. One wishes that this 41-minute CD contained another 30 or 35 minutes worth of recordings; even so, African Reggae is yet another enjoyable compilation from Putumayo. (Allmusic)
Vijf CD's met reggae classics, natuurlijk grotendeels van Jamaicaanse origine, maar niet alleen. Want ook o.a. UB40, Ruud Gullit & Revelation Time en Ziggi zijn vertegenwoordigd. Het was oorspronkelijk het idee om iedere CD een eigen thema te geven. Dat is uiteindelijk losgelaten, maar de grote lijnen van dat oerconcept zijn nog zichtbaar: CD1 bevat grote hits; CD2 bevat veelal classics uit de jaren '60 en '70; CD4 en 5 bevatten voornamelijk moderne reggae-vormen uit de jaren '80 en later. Vooral op CD5 is er veel ruimte voor 21ste eeuws talent. Alle CD's beginnen trouwens met een nummer van Bob Marley & The Wailers, maar zijn bekendste werk is blijkbaar niet vrijgegeven voor een compilatie als deze.
"Generally acknowledged to be Black Uhuru's masterpiece as well as one of the defining documents of roots reggae, "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner" (originally released on the Taxi label under the title "Showcase" in 1979, then reissued as "Black Uhuru" in 1980) was the first album to feature singer Puma Jones as a member of the group's vocal trio lineup, and it was also their first with Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare. These additions gave the group a tremendous lift: Jones' keening, almost North African-inflected voice became an instantly identifiable part of Black Uhuru's sound, and the chugging rhythms supplied by Dunbar and Shakespeare were the perfect instrumental accompaniment. True to its original title, this collection of singles and new tracks is presented in "showcase" style; each track is followed without pause by a dub version. Highly recommended." In tegenstelling tot z'n (studio-)voorgangers werd dit album in Londen opgenomen. Bovenop de 10 originele tracks zijn hier drie extrablokken van steeds 5 tracks te vinden. Eerst enkele studio-outtakes en single-mixen. Dan live-opnamen gemaakt in het Londense Rainbow Theatre: dit zijn outtakes van de opnamen voor de "Live At The Rainbow"-video. En dan is er een erg lekker toetje: fraaie sessies met dubkoning Lee "Scratch" Perry.
