"João Gilberto's debut album, 1959's "Chega De Saudade", was one of the most important bossa nova recordings, and credited by many as the album that launched bossa nova as a major popular music genre. The 12 songs introduce several of bossa nova's most beloved trademarks: breezy, soothing melodies and vocals; tight arrangements with seamless blends of clipped guitar strokes and light orchestration, and, of course, the bossa nova rhythm. This 2010 reissue adds a lot of bonus material, starting with 3 1959 Gilberto recordings from the film Orfeo do Carnaval, among them another classic, "Manha de Carnaval." Also included are 11 1957-59 Brazilian recordings by artists óther than Gilberto that are tightly or loosely aligned with the early bossa nova movement. Gilberto was involved in most, but not all, of these as a songwriter or guitarist (among them three versions of Gilberto's "Ho-Ba-La-La"). De Braziliaanse zangeres Luciana Souza voert op dit album uit 2001 duetten uit met drie landgenoten: jazzgitarist Romero Lubambo, klassiek gitarist Marco Pereira en singer-songwriter Walter Santos (Souza's vader, die in 2008 is overleden). Luciana Souza in het tekstboekje: "The intent was to follow the great tradition of guitar and voice in Brazilian music, and also pay homage to my father and the many great musicians from the Northeast of Brazil".
"The move to the young, hip label Trama seems to have done good for Gal, as Hoje is her most dynamic and fresh-sounding album in years. But although the songwriters who contributed to the album may be comparatively young, the music in itself is largely traditional, ranging from bossa nova and Afro-Brazilian folk music to Gal's typical brand of soft ballads. One of the most surprising and welcome songwriting contributors to Hoje is the African artist Lokua Kanza, from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Together with Carlos Rennó, he forms what proves to be a very fine songwriting team. Their lovely ballad "Te Adorar" brings out the best of Gal and is perhaps the most beautiful song on the album".
