"Janssen staat erom bekend dat hij zich steeds beweegt op het snijpunt van improvisatie en compositie. En dat hoor je hier maar al te goed. Hoewel er nogal hectisch van start gegaan wordt met Hiphop, waar de dissonanten ons, mede dankzij de sax van Ab Baars en de snerpende viooluithalen van Maurice Horsthuis, al om de oren vliegen, wordt er toch regelmatig een flinke scheut water bij de wijn gedaan. Zo neemt het parmantige Slow Fox al onmiddellijk wat gas terug. Pogo 1 en Pogo 2 spelen dan vervolgens de improv-kaart helemaal uit: brokken gitaar met rockesthetiek, stukken chaotische blazers en fragmentarische dissonante strijkers worden afgewisseld met traditionele swing, maar de onrust blijft zich toch steeds opdringen. Afsluiter Mambo vat de plaat eigenlijk goed samen. Hier krijgt ieder van de elf muzikanten de kans om zich van zijn beste kant te laten zien, en net als je denkt dat de chaos de overhand weer eens gaat krijgen brengt de piano van Janssen iedereen weer mooi in de pas". The debut recording from this tentet is comprised of pieces dating back to 1988. the band was created by Paul Termos to explore his own fascinations with the checks ands balances of creating pieces for a large ensemble. The eight pieces here explore some idea of how improvisational, compositional, and aleatoric elements are combined. Everything isn't in its place, but the harmonic elements and polytonal exchange between the saxophones and percussion instruments (piano, drums, vibes), which in turn engage the brass and bass, is nothing short of remarkable. Throughout there is great warmth, humor and vision on the part of both composer and instrumentalists. In places carnival and circus music are juxtaposed free jazz and then ballroom swing and finally hard bop with a harmonic invention that erects and collapses itself as a first foundational precept to something else that's never articulated. "As with Ornette Coleman, the late Paul Termos had a biting, mournful, and searing voice on alto sax that was capable of speaking volumes with a single phrase. This first Paul Termos Sessions volume finds the saxophonist in a duo with the eccentric pianist Misha Mengelberg, who is as good a partner as can be imagined. When Termos erupts with clipped clusters, as he sometimes does, Mengelberg encourages him by lying low, but the pianist also fills spaces dramatically when the occasion demands it, and Mengelberg's own low-tech solos are almost always worth hearing. Termos' eloquent soloing sets the tone on the first track, "Dag Paul Hallo Misha," which comprises almost half the album, which was recorded live at the Bimhuis club in Amsterdam and released in collaboration with Bimhuis Records. Alhoewel Paul Termos (1952) niet alleen componist maar ook improviserend saxofonist is, geven de vijf stukken die bij Donemus op één cd zijn verschenen toch in de eerste plaats een beeld van de componist. Te beluisteren zijn het "Concert voor altsaxofoon en kamerorkest", het "Strijkkwartet I", "Expres(s)", "Groundwork" en "Concert voor fluit en kamerorkest". Deze werken weerspiegelen een heldere en uitgebalanceerde wereld die bepaald lijkt te zijn door orde en eenvoud. Bij Termos is dus geen sprake van complexe structuren die, onwaarneembaar voor de luisteraar, het geheel bepalen. De muziek is gewoon wat zij is. De ordende geest van de componist zoekt echter ook naar wat Termos "de geheime wens van het stuk" noemt: een detail of een lijn die het ontstane verwachtingspatroon vervolgens onderuit schopt. Tot de uitvoerenden van dit sympathieke oeuvre behoren ondermeer saxofonist Arno Bornkamp, fluitiste Eleonore Pameijer, het Doelenensemble, het Mondriaankwartet en het Radio Kamerorkest o.l.v. Ed Spanjaard.
