"Composed in 1882/3, Rimsky-Korsakovs Piano Concerto was the last of a series of works written in the very happy middle period of his life. Dedicated to the memory of Liszt, it is indebted to that composer in its single-movement structure (akin to Liszts Second Concerto in A major) and in its virtuosic decorative pianism. Unlike the Liszt Concerto, however, Rimsky-Korsakovs is based on only one themeNo 18 from Balakirevs seminal folksong collection. (...) Balakirevs Concerto does not deserve the neglect into which it has fallen. In spite of the half century or so it took to compose, it holds together well. And the heroic nature of the first movement, the solemn and intense beauty of the second and the scintillation of the third, ensure that the listener is treated to a wide variety of aural experience which adds up, in the end, to a satisfactory whole." (Edward Garden in de hoestekst) "These three works make an excellent programme; an admirably conceived and executed disc." (Gramophone)
"Naxos' series of 'English String Miniatures' continues to delight the senses with both pastoral and sophisticated invention. Some of the music is semi-familiar (the Holst, the Delius), much of it is obscure, and all of it is agreeable and unassuming...Conductor Lloyd-Jones gives each work the attention it deserves, and there is no feeling of routine or mere dutifulness in these performances. The Northern Sinfonia, based in Newcastle upon Tyne, makes a good impression with its clean playing and sensitivity. Naxos' warm engineering is finer than it was on the previous volume, which was slightly marred by overly resonant sound." (Raymond Tuttle, Classical Net, Naxos.com)
"If you like English pastoral orchestral music, you will love this disc...it would be hard to find a more ingratiating, lovely and high spirited collection of orchestral gems...The Royal Ballet Sinfonia plays with exquisite elegance for conductor David Lloyd Jones and the recording captures the idyllic acoustic of the bygone era this music reminds us of. Another bargain from Naxos that pleases the senses and the heart." (Robert Moon, Audiophile Audition)
