The imaging's not as precise as the Cheskys; it definitely wasn't a crossed-cardioid affair. The bass isn't as stygian as the Telarcs; Shirley don't shoot off no cannons. But the overall acoustic is very intimate, with fairly realistic depth and soundstaging. The reverb sounds real; if it's fake, it's the best fake I've ever heard. The cymbals, usually the worst-sounding instruments on digital after horns, are clean and present. The piano is the least realistically portrayed instrument here, stretching as it does across the entire soundstage, but it sounds so lovely it's only slightly distracting. 'A supple, driving rhythm section featuring pianist Fred Hersch, bassist Marc Johnson, and drummer Joey Baron gives Thielemans sufficient support to float his mastery at will. He pleads, prods and probes, begs, borrows and steals on the gentle, bittersweet title track by Jacques Brel. Here, as well as on "Blue 'n Green which pleasingly morphs into "All Blues, as on the original Miles Davis classicHersch vividly demonstrates the "harmonic and pianistic colors that so appeals to Thielemans. Baron is a chameleon who feels comfortable under the skin of many a rhythmic style, but he performs best when he rides and drops bombs during a fast scorcher, like the double-time section of "All Blues. Styles associated with Scott LaFaro, George Mraz, and Eddie Gomez all show up in Marc Johnson's playing, with some Sam Jones-like bippity Bong Dong ba-di-ba-de Ong bong for good measure. "Toots Thielemans meets Rob Franken, vol door het Nederlands Jazz Archief opgeduikelde opnames. Toots nam tussen 1973 en 1983 veel op met de toetsenist Rob Franken, de in 1983 overleden pionier op elektrische piano. Ze speelden een gemengd repertoire van jazzklassiekers, filmmuziek tot eigen werk. Als muzak bedoeld eigenlijk – functionele achtergrondmuziek. Maar bij nader inzien behoorlijk diepgaand. Beter gezegd: een openbaring. Dit zijn opnames vol zon en vrijheid. Niet alleen valt te horen hoe Toots door het energieke spel van Franken zijn improvisatietaal verdiepte – creatief, lucht tussen de noten en meer durf – maar het is ook gewoon mooi hoe Toots wordt aangestoken door de groove. Toots Thielemans (Brussel, 1922) is wereldberoemd als de man die van de mondharmonica een volwaardig jazzinstrument maakte. Hij brak door in de jaren vijftig, toen hij speelde met onder anderen Benny Goodman en George Shearing. In 1962 componeerde hij de wereldwijde hit "Bluesette". Nederland kent hem daarnaast ook van de soundtracks van "Turks Fruit", "Baantjer" en "Sesamstraat". Dit nieuwe album is een verzameling van sublieme live-opnamen. Met de bekende liedjes, vol leven waarbij tranen telkens op de loer liggen. In Toots' woorden: tussen een lach en een traan. Dit is de luxe uitvoering met uitgebreid CD-boekje, zoals die exclusief via de Volkskrant leverbaar was.
