"This 1959 compilation of the maestro, Bebo Valdés, was recorded in Havana. The sound quality is exceptional. These choice tracks were recorded just before the great pianist fled Cuba in hopes that the regime and his exile would be short-lived. Music trumps politics, so these great arrangements of the legendary pianist provide a peek back to a glorious golden era. The orchestra is in top form and so is the maestro. This is an integral part of the mother lode of the Cuban big-band sound. There's plenty of drive and percussion in the cha chas and mambos to move the dustiest of shoes and hips. With all due respect to the revival spurred by Ry Cooder, gems like this album are some of the original fountains that flowed during the heyday of Cuban big bands. CD1 bevat "Suite Cubana" , een latinsuite die de legendarische Cubaanse pianist/componist tussen 1992 en 1997 componeerde. Tot zijn vreugde werd het werk in 2002 opgenomen, door een door hemzelf geleid ensemble bestaande uit zo'n 20 topkrachten uit de latinwereld, met 13 blazers. CD2, "El Solar De Bebo" is veel losser van karakter en gemaakt met een kleiner ensemble met slechts 3 blazers. Ballads worden afgewisseld met opwindende jams. Op de DVD zijn een radio-interviews en sessies voor die CD te zien.
"This CD is both historic and quite exciting. Bebo Valdes (father of Chucho, the leader of Irakere) was one of the giants of Cuban jazz and popular music until he fled the country in 1960. This recording is also significant in that it is one of the first times that Cuban exiles had recorded with Cubans still living under Castro (guitarist Carlos Emilio Morales and percussionist Amadito Valdes). Paquito D'Rivera (who organized this set) deserves a lot of credit for its success, but Valdes is the real star. He composed eight new selections in the 36 hours before the recordings began, although he was 76 years old at the time. The final results are full of strong melodies, stirring rhythms, exciting ensembles, and lots of variety. The instrumentation differs on each track, with plenty of solo space for D'Rivera, trombonist Juan-Pablo Torres, trumpeter Diego Urcola, and the pianist. This is one of the finest Afro-Cuban jazz recordings of recent times. Highly recommended." (Allmusic)
