"This 3-CD, 73-track set presents, for the first time ever on a single edition, all existing sessions featuring the singing of Dinah Washington with bands conducted by Quincy Jones, who was also responsible for most of the arrangements on these dates. Ranging from 1955 to 1961, the sessions include the complete contents of the classic albums "For Those in Love" (Emarcy MG-36011), "I Wanna Be Loved" (Mercury SR-60729), and "The Swingin’ Miss “D”" (EmArcy MG-36104), along with various other tunes issued on singles. Contained here are her unforgettable renditions of “Mad About the Boy”, “Blue Gardenia” and “I’ll Close My Eyes” (the latter two were selected by Clint Eastwood for the soundtrack to his movie The Bridges of Madison County)." (Jazz Messengers)
"Dinah Washington's "Sings Bessie Smith" and "Sings Fats Waller" are highly regarded albums that showcase her interpretations of classic blues and jazz standards. "Sings Bessie Smith" features her powerful vocals and unique phrasing, bringing a modern twist to Smith's repertoire while retaining the drama of the originals. "Sings Fats Waller" highlights Washington's ability to handle Waller's playful and romantic tunes with equal skill, often featuring her husband at the time, Eddie Chamblee, on saxophone. Both albums are considered highlights of her career and essential additions to any jazz collection." (Jazzwise)
"Credit the film and album The Bridges of Madison County with causing a great deal of excitement about crooner Johnny Hartman, a vocalist with a silky voice that almost defies description. Hartman has seen many of his albums reissued, with rapidly rising sales, since the release of the film. This collection marks the debut of Clint Eastwood's Malpaso Records label, which Eastwood intends to focus on jazz, and it's certainly a good start, featuring songs from Hartman, Dinah Washington, Irene Kral, and Barbara Lewis, as well as two versions of "Doe Eyes," an instrumental piece composed by Eastwood and arranged/conducted by longtime Eastwood collaborator Lennie Niehaus. Overall, the album is charming, low-key, and smooth, very much a record worth getting." (Allmusic).
