"For some, Johnny Winter's debut album for Columbia remains his high-water mark for its seamless meld of blues and hard rock. For most of the rest, it was his later group, with Rick Derringer and Murray Krugman stepping into the producer's chairs (as well as Derringer being a member of the band), which provided the defining moments in '70s blues-rock. BGO assembles the first studio album and Live Johnny Winter into a smoking double-disc package that offers the real differences between what this band attempted to do in the studio and the incendiary stage attack this band was capable of. The basic deal is this: BGO takes great care in their remastering efforts and in presentation with fine liner note essays, and it separates the albums onto two discs. The first disc has the original version of "Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo," that Derringer scored with some years later, and the latter is all killer, no filler. Check "Mean Town Blues," for proof." Het tweede album van de bluesrock-zanger/gitarist, waarop z'n broer Edgar toetsen en saxofoon speelt. Veel energiek boogiënde blues, waaronder een flinke reeks covers van o.a. Little Richard en Chuck Berry. Niet alleen bevat deze editie twee studio-bonustracks, er is een compleet live-album aan toegevoegd, opgenomen in de Londense Royal Albert Hall in 1970. Ook hier speelt Edgar mee. Sterker nog: hij krijgt de ruimte om zijn eigen instrumental "Frankenstein" te spelen. Het is de eerste opgenomen van versie van het stuk, dat twee jaar later op "The Edgar Winter Group" terecht zou komen en een flinke Amerikaanse hit zou worden. Die uiteindelijke versie is pompeus, met invloeden uit zowel progrock als jazzrock, deze oerversie is, zoals te verwachten is met Johnny's band, veel bluesier.

Voor het eerst in jaren een studioplaat van de albino, al sinds midden jaren '60 bluesrocker van formaat. Zingen was nooit z'n sterkste kant; hij klinkt soms behoorlijk onvast. Z'n gitaarspel is altijd volvet, vooral z'n slidewerk is fabuleus.
