'Shy Angels is Bill Laswell's omwerking van het hele 'Madman of God' album (te leen bij de Muziekbank) van Sussan Deyhim. Het origineel ging al vrij om met de klassieke Perzische muzikale vormen, Bill Laswell gaat daar nog veel verder mee. Westerse ambient en drum 'n base en tegelijktijd exotisch, mystiek, Perzisch. Geen gefreak dit keer van de New Yorkse bassist/producer-extraordinaire, maar loungy dubgrooves, met ook een flinke rol voor de Ethiopische zangeres Gigi (wiens solo-album hij produceerde).

Na Axiom Ambient komt de overproduktieve Bill Laswell met dit P-funk project waar hij drie jaar (voor zijn doen eeuwen) aan gesleuteld heeft. Met de laatste opnamen van de overleden Funkadelic-gitarist Eddie Hazel en andere P-funk-helden.
De Algerijnse Amerikaan keert terug naar z'n Noord-Afrikaanse roots, in een samenwerking met enkele vooraanstaande zangeressen uit de Maghreb, uit Arabische culturen, maar ook de Joodse (Michal Cohen met het van Ofra Haza bekende 'Im Ninalou'. Onder de begeleiders vinden we geestverwanten als Bill Laswell, Mercan Dede en Karsh Kale. Samen creeëren ze een warm amalgaam, dat door het veelvuldig gebruik van akoestische trad. instrumenten en terughoudende inzet van electronica vooral heel organisch klinkt.

"The smoky ambience of the sixty-year-old Septeto Nacional and friends recorded here is a milestone of Afro-Caribbean culture. These men were among the players to first develop the "son" sound in Cuba. On top of these impeccable historical credentials, their mature voices - deep and dark as polished mahogany - and virtuoso playing really swing, and the seduction of the listener is complete. Furthermore, Laswell's and Touitou's package goes a step further than the Cooder Cuban project. While the first CD is a "straight", untweaked session documenting these seasoned players going flat out and featuring plenty of vocals both male and female, the second CD is a dub translation, very much in the spirit of _Boniche Dub_; once again Bill seems to share the dubbing duties with Jean. In common with that record, this attempt at creating "Rhum and Bass" dub seems a tad unfocused at times, but definitely holds a certain fascination.
