Dit debuut-album uit 1972 volgde direct op de (op dit album opgenomen) debuutsingle, die meteen de grootste hit was: "A Horse With No Name". De groep had een zeer Amerikaanse westcoast-softrock/folkrock/countryrocksound: vooral Crosby, Stills & Nash hoor je terug in de schitterende, breed uitwaaierende en toch zijdezachte harmoniezang. Let wel: America was wel nét iets eerder dan The Eagles en Dan Fogelberg, andere belangrijke uit countryrock en folkrock voortgekomen softrocknamen.
"By the time these two albums came out in the 1980s, America's sound had changed a lot from the simple country-rock of their first hits. Their '80s work was slicker, poppier, and more in line with the easy-listening (or "yacht rock") of the day. Still, the hooky songwriting and beautiful harmonies of the earlier days was in effect on these two albums. "View From the Ground" yielded the duo's last US Top Ten hit, "You Can Do Magic." The famous hired guns and session pros involved yield a slick sound. Blood, Sweat & Tears veteran Bobby Colomby produced a couple of tracks. Toto is heavily represented and backing vocalists include the Beach Boys' Carl Wilson, Christopher Cross, and the Eagles' Timothy B. Schmit. "This second album, America's finest album, refines and focuses the folk-pop approach found on their debut release. The songs here are tighter and more forthright, with fewer extended solo instrumental sections than before. The colorful arrangements, while still acoustic guitar-based, feature more electric guitar and keyboards. The performance quality is more assured, among the most urgently committed the group would ever put on vinyl. A number of the song subjects here exhibit a yearning sense of wanderlust and love of the outdoors that proves to be highly evocative and compelling (particularly on "Moon Song," "Ventura Highway," "California Revisited," and "Cornwall Blank"). Chordal progressions are sophisticated and contain many subtle surprises. A few new style wrinkles can be seen in the country-influenced "Don't Cross the River," the drivingly gutsy "California Revisited", and the hushed yet mildly funky "Head & Heart." "Westcoast pop voor liefhebbers van: Crosby, Stills & Nash, The Doobie Brothers, The Eagles en The Beatles. America is in Nederland vooral bekend vanwege de vroege jaren 70 hit "A Horse With No Name". Ondanks, of misschien wel dankzij, deze hit is de band nooit heel serieus genomen en dat is jammer. De Britse (!!) band heeft een aantal hele mooie platen op haar naam staan en is tot op de dag van vandaag actief. "Here & Now" bestaat uit één CD met nieuw werk en een live-plaat met alle grote hits. De hits klinken nog altijd geweldig en ook het nieuwe werk mag er zijn, zeker als hiervoor muzikanten als James Iha (The Smashing Pumpkins) en Ryan Adams (!!) en leden van My Morning Jacket en Nada Surf komen opdraven. Zonder concessies te doen klinkt America ook in 2007 nog als een band met bestaansrecht. Wat een aangename verrassing dit Here & Now!
