"Kris Kristofferson first made his mark in Nashville as a songwriter. His work bridged the gap between traditional country and the counterculture, earning Kristofferson his "outlaw" tag. The set starts with the three songs that remain the cornerstone of his artistry: "Help Me Make It Through the Night", "Me and Bobby McGee", and "Sunday Morning Comin' Down". Not far behind on CD 1 are two more oft-covered classics, "For the Good Times" and "Loving Her Was Easier (Than Anything I'll Ever Do Again)." The set continues with favorites such as the 1973 Country chart-topper "Why Me" and three duets with Rita Coolidge with whom he was married between 1973 and 1980. In 1984 maakten ze tot ieder verrassing samen een album: Highwayman. Nooit eerder had er binnen de countrywereld zo'n 'supergroep' bestaan. Na een tweede album gingen de heren zelfs samen op tournee onder de naam Highwaymen (nu met een meervouds-'e' dus). Deze opnamen stammen van die tournee, uit 1990. Tussen de 26 songs zijn hier en daar delen uit interviews te zien, waarin de nodige anekdotes voorbijkomen.
Dit is eigen uitgave van de Bottom Line, een kleine club in in New York (capaciteit: 400 personen), podium voor 'alternatieve popmuziek'. In februari 1994 bestond het podium 20 jaar en was er een speciale jubileumprogrammering. Zo werd een succesvolle concertserie uit het verleden eenmalig nieuw leven in geblazen: het door de bekende radio-DJ Vin Scelsa gepresenteerde 'In Their Own Words'. Op deze avonden nodigde hij enkele singer-songwriters uit die over hun songs vertellen en uit de losse pols er ook enkele spelen, al dan niet geholpen door de mede-uitgenodigden. Bij deze speciale gelegenheid waren dat Lou Reed, Kris Kristofferson, Suzanne Vega en Victoria Williams. Voor deze 2CD-weergave van de avond zijn de bijdragen van de dames eruit geknipt, op wat achtergrondzang van Williams na. Opvallend is vooral dat Kristofferson een grote fan van Reed blijkt en dan met name van diens album "New York". Beiden vertellen ongedwongen over hun ambacht en spelen bijzondere versies van enkele van hun sterkste songs.
Op één track na concentreert deze dubbelaar zich op z'n eerste jaren als solo-artiest, van 1969 tot 1972. Maarliefst 9 van de 12 tracks van z'n debuut 'Kristofferson' uit 1970 staan op CD 1. Hij was toen al 34, maar had toen al wel een Master Degree Engelse literatuur in Oxford gehaald, jarenlang gediend in het Amerikaanse leger en vanaf 1966 in Nashville als broodschrijver gefungeerd (en al diverse grote hits op z'n naam staan).
