"Soul Brother has given us a long overdue compilation of Gary Bartz's experimental jazz material from the 1970s, beginning with his classic Harlem Bush Music albums, Taifa and Uhuru from 1970 and 1971, with his band NTU Troop. While it's impossible to overstate the influence his brief tenure with Miles Davis had on him (Bartz is featured on the Live-Evil recordings), the saxophonist and composer was exploring other avenues of creative black music as well, from funk to soul to the blues". (...) Anthology is highly recommended for a slim but nonetheless dynamite portrait of the artist during one of the most exciting periods of his career". (Thom Jurek, Allmusic).
"On this focused and passionate record, Alan Pasqua is joined by bassist Dave Holland and drummer Paul Motian -- two players with stellar reputations who don't appear together often. Motian's post-'70s playing tends to be free and fragmented, but he approaches Pasqua's material with a straight-ahead sense of swing. The leader, for his part, became known as a synth player following his work with the Tony Williams Lifetime in the late '70s, but here his playing and writing are closer to acoustic post-boppers like Mulgrew Miller and Kenny Barron. Pasqua's elegance and fluidity are amply apparent on the trio features: "Mr. Softee," "Taiowa," "Dedicated to You," and "Grace." The album is also spiced up by three high-profile guests. Tenor sax star Michael Brecker contributes a rare soprano performance on "San Michele," and he and brother Randy Brecker (trumpet) sit in on "Emergence." The esteemed altoist Gary Bartz joins Randy Brecker on "Homage," "Ellingtonia," and "Sha' la' ko'."" (Allmusic).
"A fine drummer who performs in advanced jazz settings, Chip White is also a talented composer. In the '70s,'80s and '90s, he played with many top jazz musicians including Carmen McRae, Jaki Byard, John Abercrombie, Johnny Coles, Enrico Rava, Mulgrew Miller, Gary Bartz and John Hicks, recording with many of them. He formed the Chip White Ensemble in 1984. In 1994, Chip White recorded Harlem Sunset, his debut set as a leader." (Allmusic).
