"David Murray, a veteran saxophonist and key figure in free jazz and avant-garde circles since the 1970s, showcases his prowess with a new quartet on the album "Francesca". Featuring talented younger musicians Marta Sanchez on piano, Luke Stewart on bass, and Russell Carter on drums, the ensemble delivers a captivating blend of jazz tradition and fiery soloing across eight tracks. The album kicks off with the title track, a joyful and expressive piece dedicated to Murray’s wife. Maintaining a straightforward 3/4 time signature, the tune, harmonically transparent, never loses composure even when Murray gets out of orbit with his improvisational extravagance and fervency. “Ninno”, originally recorded for Murray’s 2023 trio album "Plumb" (with Questlove and Roy Angry), reappears here with crossover potential and immersed in groove. With a catchy four-note riff at the center, this cut blends funk, Latin, and swinging jazz elements in different proportions." (Jazztrail, 4 uit 5 sterren)

"This is a relatively little known album recorded live by a large assembly of Jazz musicians from several countries situated around the Baltic Sea, called JazzBaltica Ensemble, directed by American saxophonist / composer David Murray. The ensemble included some of the absolutely top-notch Jazz players from the Baltic countries. Another American taking part in the ensemble is tuba player Howard Johnson. The music is a wonderful example of a Big Band setting, which allows for a series of expanded improvisations by all the participants, either individually or in small groups, accompanied by the entire ensemble. Although clear melodic themes are stated periodically, most of the music is freely improvised and allows for a large degree of individual expression. The solos are all exceptional, which is not surprising considering the incredible level of the musicians involved." (Polish-Jazz).
"With tunes such as "Let's Get It On," "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay," "Try a Little Tenderness" and "Night Train" being included, this CD certainly qualifies as one of the most unusual of all the World Saxophone Quartet recordings. Far from being a sellout to commercialism, this set features the WSQ (altoists Julius Hemphill and Oliver Lake, tenor saxophonist David Murray and baritonist Hamiet Bluiett) meeting the six soul and R&B tunes (which are joined by three complementary originals) head on. The WSQ was always open to playing rhythmically and was not allergic to strong melodies while including solo and group improvisations that were quite advanced. The combination works quite well on this surprising success". (Scott Yanow, Allmusic).
"This album-- featuring jazz, poetry, rap, and chants-- is a wonderful celebration of Pan-Africanist culture. The combination of the recent poetry of Amiri Baraka, and David Murray's fantastic Pan-African group represent a new departure in the music. Apparently, one of the veteran drummers is the creator of Senegal's national anthem. And the CD features Senegalese rap, alongside some of the best contemporary drumming around." "I got this CD because I found the track Evidence to be a powerful fusion of Amiri Baraka's scathing poetry and Murray's jazz composition. Unfortunately, though, there are no other tracks on the CD like this one. That being said, the playing on the other tracks is good and showcase Murray's adaptability as a player/composer." (Amazon)
"Tenor saxophonist David Murray and his octet don't play note-for-note recreations but allow Trane's searching spirit to dominate the proceedings. Murray shines on all tracks, switching between tenor and bass clarinet. The octet featuring D.D. Jackson (p), Craig Harris (tmb), Ravi Best (t), Rasul Siddik (t), James Spaulding (as, fl), Jaribu Shahid (b), and Mark Johnson (d) most of the time sound like twice the number of musicians. Especially on the raucous big band versions of "Giant Steps" and "Lazy Bird." However, they can achieve a complete turnaround when playing the ballad "Naima" or "India," which becomes an ethereal, haunting mix (complete with tabla) sounding more like electric period Miles Davis unplugged than Coltrane's arrangement. The proceedings wind down with an engaging 15-minute version of "A Love Supreme: Part 1: Acknowledgment" proving Murray has studied not only the music of John Coltrane, but like him insists on applying his individuality through his horn." (Al Campbell, Allmusic)
Dertiende album van het World Saxophone Quartet. De vier saxofonisten, waaronder David Murray, spelen samen met drie Senegalese meesterdrummers.
"Celebrating the Caribbean spirit through bold rhythms and atonal experiment, this disc is for the most part an intriguing effort. While the "noodling" is not for everyone's taste, there are many beautiful moments throughout." (Allmusic)
