"Herwig's fourth and most recent date for the Dutch Criss Cross label, Hieroglyphica is a no holds barred quartet set of all originals that finds everyone working at full throttle. Without other horns to get in the way, this is the best place to experience Herwig at his most incendiary. Starting with a low moan and then breaking into wild glissandos through the upper register, Herwig kicks off the title track with a dazzling display that then builds to a frenetic climax with drums wailing and the rest of the ensemble participating in the collective frenzy. (...) Technically accomplished and still filled with communicative appeal, Hieroglyphica just may be Herwig's most brilliant recital to date". (www.allaboutjazz.com).
"Op zijn nieuwste album (zijn achttiende onder eigen naam) laat hij zeven klassieke jazznummers horen, samen met een recente standard, het titelnummer geschreven door pianist Kenny Barron. De setlist lijkt een gemakzuchtige verzameling van de meest afgekloven nummers. Valt er nog iets te ontdekken in nummers als "All the things you are", "Round Midnight", "Sometimes I’m Happy" of "The Man I Love"? Voor Bill Charlap wel. Even de tijd een kleine zestig jaar terugzetten en Charlap maakt er pure avant-garde van. In 1970 zou dit album sensationeel geweest zijn. Voor wie in 2023 live aanwezig was bij de opnamen van deze Saturday Night at the Village Vanguard’-sessie, was hij nog steeds sensationeel met zijn verrassende en vernieuwende manier om bekende akkoordenschema’s door elkaar te husselen en er topjazz van te maken." "It is unusual to hear a son and his mother together in a jazz setting, but this ballads CD is a stunning duo date. Charlap is best known as the leader of a superb piano trio. Stewart has recorded only sporadically, though she has worked with her son on some club dates. Her instrument has mellowed like a fine wine, with a slight vibrato that adds to the intimacy of each performance. Charlap's interludes between phrases are lush yet never overdone, while he makes great use of space in his accompaniment. While there are quite a few standards present, they also chose songs that have been unjustly neglected. "Here I Am in Love Again," written by the late Moose Charlap (the singer's husband and the pianist's father), is a hopeful song about love in its early stages, which they approach with tenderness. Another Charlap composition, "I Never Go There Anymore," is just the opposite, a sentimental look back at a distant past that can never be recaptured. The standards are just as enticing." Jonge mainstreampianist met Kenny (d) & Peter (b) Washington. Ze spelen werk van Hoagy Carmichael, o.a. 'I Get Along Without You' (hier gezongen door Tony Bennett) en 'Stardust' (door Shirley Horn). Ook met gitaarlegende Jim Hall (g). Was bijv. op North Sea 2002 te zien en horen. Deze hybrid SACD-versie bevat ook een ruimtelijke multi-channel-mix.
"Altoist Phil Woods has recorded a countless number of records through the years, but few with a big band, and none previous to this release with an orchestra that he actually put together. Woods' quintet, which includes trumpeter Brian Lynch and pianist Bill Charlap, is expanded to 16 pieces for this release with such familiar associates as altoist Nelson Hill and trombonist Hal Crook (who is showcased on "Willow Weep for Me"). The altoist wrote most of the arrangements and contributed six of the nine compositions, including "Reet's Neet," "Goodbye Mr. Evans," and "All Bird's Children." The music is boppish but not overly predictable, and the charts are consistently colorful, making this an easily recommended set for straight-ahead jazz fans." (Scott Yanow, Allmusic)
