"Great trumpeter Enrico Rava sifted through experimental crossovers for years, then devoted a tribute album to Michael Jackson in the company of younger partners. "Wild Dance" is similarly cross-generational, pairing Rava's trumpet with the trombone of Gianluca Petrella, a maestro of voicelike long tones, bebop intricacies and inbuilt swing. Ravas Miles-inspired lyricism and tone control on slow music often takes centre stage in his work, but though the softly meditative "Space Girl" (with its distant intimations of drum uprisings), or the wistful "Sola" and "Overboard" show that side of him, the blurted Ornette Coleman-like flurries of "Infant" or "Happy Shades", the guitar-driven swinger "Cornette", or the soft bop "F. Express", over the excellent Enrico Morellos bustling brushwork, represent effortlessly inventive uptempo jazz playing. The closing "Frogs", with its upwardly scuttling two-horn melody over guitar and bass vamps and its rattling drumwork, is the tour de force." (J. Fordham, The Guardian)
Live-opnamen van de bigband uit Genua. M.m.v. befaamde Italiaanse jazzmusici, waaronder Enrico Rava en Paolo Fresu.
"Enrico Rava's 1975 debut for ECM, is a stellar progressive jazz effort from the Italian trumpeter. Rava had spent his formative years working with such artists as Steve Lacy, Roswell Rudd, and Carla Bley, and obviously took much to heart when approaching his own music. This is cerebral, atmospheric, often groove-oriented music that rests nicely in between late-'60s Miles Davis and "Brown Rice"-era Don Cherry with some obvious nods to the melodic jazz of Chet Baker. To these ends, such tunes as the expansive title track and the reflective "Bella" begin with lyrical melodic statements from Rava and slowly build to more serpentine, post-bop segments that push toward free jazz but never quite go atonal. Buoying Rava is an adroit ensemble of John Abercrombie (g), Palle Danielsson (b), and Jon Christensen (d). A ceaselessy inventive guitarist, Abercrombie's knotty, fractured, sometimes distorted playing is a perfect match for Rava and the two often intertwine their lines."
"Originally published in 1997 by the French label Label Bleu Banda Sonora has become a cult album worldwide selling more than 10.000 copies (a lot for a jazz album) and winning several awards like Choc de la Musique and 4 Clefs of Telerama. This album testifies the long work of Battista Lena with the Bonaventura Somma band of Chianciano Terme conducted by Paolo Scatena and an "All Stars" quintet featuring Jazz legend Enrico Rava, Gianni Coscia, Gabriele Mirabassi, Enzo Pietropaoli, Marcello Di Leonardo and Lena himself. All sound like they are all having tremendous fun. Battista Lena has taken this delightfully ragged wind orchestra and put together a programme of attractive marches and waltzes for his star soloists to play with. The material owes more to Nino Rota than Rossini," (Bandcamp)
"A reminder of why he remains one of the finest trumpeters of modern jazz." (AMG)
