"Toen Davis in juni 1970 de New Yorkse rockzaal The Fillmore aandeed, had hij met het net verschenen "Bitches Brew" een nieuw (rock)publiek bereikt, wat hem beviel, want hij putte meer inspiratie uit rock (Jimi Hendrix) en funk (Sly Stone) dan uit de jazz. De concerten die hij die vier avonden in juni 1970 gaf, werden in sterk verknipte vorm op "Miles Davis At Fillmore" uitgebracht. De 4 concerten werden met producer Teo Macero teruggeknipt tot 4 doorlopende stukken van 20 minuten. Spannend, maar tot welk subliem spel Davis toen werkelijk kwam, wordt nu pas goed duidelijk. De vier concerten staan, aangevuld met nog enkele opnamen, voor het eerst compleet op dit 4 CD's tellende deel in de inmiddels essentiële Bootleg Series. De geluidskwaliteit is optimaal. Het spel van de ritmesectie (bassist Dave Holland en drummer Jack DeJohnette) is adembenemend. Stand out track is "Variation on the Misery" with a great solo by Steve Grossman followed with a blistering guitar outing by Hiram Bullock (outstanding support also from drummer Omar Hakim). "Jelly Roll" is another fine track which includes an off-beat vocal by Marvin Peterson along with his fine trumpet work." (Vinyl Word)

This a no nonsense but eminently cerebral outing that makes the most of the two leads' knack for inventive, angular, and energetic improvisation. To these ends they dive headlong into the midtempo blues swinger "Vierd Blues," race each other to the finish line on the burning Grossman original "Sandrow," and play it cool on Thelonious Monk's "Let's Cool One"." Individually, they both get a chance to shine with Grossman nailing down the title track and Land holding down the afterglow hours on the ballad "Born to Be Blue"."
