"Canadian Jane Bunnett has distinguished herself as a soprano saxophonist and composer over a long period. This session its main focus is on the Afro-Cuban/Haitian ten-voice a cappella choir Grupo Vocal Desandann, who piqued her interest with their inventive harmonies and ability to handle challenging rhythms. These sessions feature traditional Cuban and Haitian songs and originals by Bunnett with various lyricists, along with an original plus a surprising arrangement by fellow Canadian Don Thompson, who alternates between bass, piano, vibes, and marimba. Jane Bunnett continues to prove that jazz readily absorbs the best elements of any form of music with this fine effort." (Allmusic).
"Jane Bunnett has done a great deal to document the modern Cuban jazz scene. On this CD, she mixes aspects of Cuban music with Brazilian jazz, a combination not often utilized. The music overall is a bit softer and mellower than some of her previous sets, but Bunnett is in superb form on both soprano and flute and has her fiery moments. Guitarist Filo Machado (who along with his brother, percussionist Celso Machado, is largely responsible for the Brazilian flavor) contributed five of the ten selections, while Bunnett brought in two originals. Other soloists include trumpeter Larry Cramer and pianist Hilario Duran. A continually intriguing date that grows in interest with each time listening." (Allmusic).
"Spirituals & Dedications is a nod to a period in music's history when jazz reflected a strong connection to the church and its musical repertoire. This modern interpretation of the beauty and simplicity of the traditional hymn is brought to life by an eclectic group of musicians. Together they perform the music of Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Charles Mingus, as well as several original compositions by members of the collective. Saxophonist Jane Bunnett has composed a remarkable tribute to pianist Don Pullen with "Don's Light," a slow, tranquil church mode that reflects the strong connection to the natural spirituality of the piano's white keys as played by Stanley Cowell and the gospel-tinged voice of Dean Bowman. The doctrine of effects is clearly present on this recording. For those seeking a different musical perspective on traditional hymns and the relationship between spirituality and emotions or jazz and gospel, look no further." (Paula Edelstein, AllMusic)
