Je komt het al niet zo vaak tegen, een trompet, gitaar en drumtrio, en dan is dit ook nog de eerste plaat waarop Frisell en Smith samen spelen. De elegante tinteling in het spel van Frisell combineert precies zoals je hoopt met de heldere toon, licht zwevende toon van Smith. Cyrille cirkelt daar met zijn lichtvoetige melodische spel steeds heel fraai omheen. Nooit slaat hij gewoon de maat, liever gaat hij met de andere twee bandleden in muzikaal gesprek. Alle drie zijn het meesters in het weglaten, wat in de speciaal voor dit album geschreven stukken steeds tot een mooi spanningsveld leidt. Het klinkt allemaal even teder, meditatief en ingetogen." "Akisakila is a live album by Cecil Taylor recorded at Koseinenkin Dai-Hall, in Tokyo in May 1973 and originally released on the Japanese Trio label as a double LP. It features a performance by Taylor with Jimmy Lyons and Andrew Cyrille. The Allmusic review by Thom Jurek states "The early '70s was Taylor's most articulate period of his method of propelling dynamic energy forth into conical spirals of harmonic mystery and danger. While his music had dispensed with the notions of form and interval long before this, the simultaneous explosion of group energy reached its first zenith during this period... "Japanese koto wonder Miya Masaoka teams up with bassist Reggie Workman and drummer Andrew Cyrille for a set of originals, traditional tunes, and -- as indicated in the title -- Monk numbers. The koto is a harp that has existed in Japan since antiquity. Masaoka is first and foremost a folk musician and an improviser; her jazz leanings inform them both. Her command of the jazz and improvisational idioms here is total. She is unquestionably the bandleader, despite the lofty, well-deserved reputations of her accomplices. The set closes with a tribute piece, the seven-minute "Monk's Sigh in July," a deeply meditative piece reflecting the elongated modal motifs in Monk's mature work with Columbia and even Black Lion when he was reinventing himself once again. It's a bit smarmy in how obvious it is, but it is also an ingenious use of drone against harmony and a deft methodology for creating open improvisational space. This disc is a winner." (Allmusic)
