De jonge Australische bassiste (*1986) viel op met beestachtig spel bij Jeff Beck (zie bijv. de DVD van Eric Claptons Crossroads-festival 2007). Ondanks haar leeftijd speelde ze eerder al met fusionkanonnen als Chick Corea en Frank Gambale en was ze 'special guest' tijdens een tournee van The Allman Brothers Band. Dit is haar solodebuut, met fusion in een aan Mike Stern en John Scofield verwante stijl. Drummer is geweldenaar Keith Carlock, o.a. bekend van Steely Dan. Hij legt hier werkelijk weergaloze bases neer middels onnavolgbare drumpatronen. Gitarist Wayne Krantz speelde o.a. op Donald Fagens "Morph The Cat". Hij zorgt met wonderlijke nootbuigingen voor Scofield-reminiscenties. Seamus Blake is een degelijke hardbop-saxofonist, die meerdere albums opnam voor het Criss Cross-label van Enschedeër Gerry Teekens. With Alex Sipiagin on trumpet, Seamus Blake on tenor and soprano sax, David Kikoski on piano, James Genus on bass, and Jeff "Tain" Watts on drums, Herwig can be sure of the group's ability to bring lushly orchestrated charts to life and improvise with sterling clarity and brilliance. Conceptually, with the title track and also with pieces called "The Tesseract," "From Another Dimension," "Triangle," and "The Magic Door," Herwig seems preoccupied with geometry and some of its metaphysical implications. "A gifted saxophonist, Seamus Blake is a forward-thinking improviser with a distinctive approach to modern creative jazz and swinging post-bop. Emerging in the '90s, he came to wide acclaim after winning the 2002 Thelonious Monk Jazz Award. As a leader, he has also released a handful of his own adventurous acoustic jazz albums. He also leads the genre-bending funk and jazz-rock-influenced outfit the Bloomdaddies. Criss Cross is a bop-oriented label, so this particular release was a real departure. The music uses electronics a bit; the playing is open to the influences of the avant-garde and funk, and the instrumentation is a bit different: Seamus Blake and Chris Cheek on tenors, Jesse Murphy on electric bass and both Jorge Rossy and Dan Reiser on drums. With the exception of an eccentric version of "Sing, Sing, Sing," all of the tunes are originals by either Blake or Cheek, including such titles as "Hick As Heck," "Final Sauna" and "To Be Ornette to Be."
