Soundtrack van de film Sen fout la mort (No Fear, No Die) van Claire Denis uit 1990. Het is een verhaal over twee zwarte immigranten.
In Europa werden in de jaren '60 de grote Amerikaanse jazzartiesten als helden onthaald en viel hen een behandeling ten deel die in het verlengde lag van wat gebruikelijk was in de wereld van klassieke muziek. Concerten werden gehouden op chique klassieke concertpodia en werden regelmatig vastgelegd door TV-camera's. Ook werd er vaak een optreden gepland in een klinische TV-studio. In thuisland de VS was dit zeer ongebruikelijk. Het is de oorzaak dat de Jazz Icons-serie voornamelijk Europees bronmateriaal gebruikt. Zoals deze twee optredens van de invloedrijke, hoogst eigenzinnige pianist in kwartetopstelling, inderdaad klinisch vastgelegd in Noorwegen en Denemarken. Monk wordt vereenzelvigd met haast kubistische composities als "Epistrophy", hier ook op de setlist, en niet zozeer met standards. Daarom is het uiterst interessant te horen wat hij doet in een lange bewerking van de standard "Lulu's Back In Town". Inderdaad: hij maakt er met z'n altijd wat hoekige stijl een typisch Monks-stuk van.
"Tenor saxophone player Bill Barron (1927-1989) possessed an original voice - not revolutionary, but unique in its way. Live At Cobi's comes from a pair of late '80s concerts Barron gave not long before his death. Presented here is a live gig by a briefly reunited Barron Brothers Quartet. Bill and his pianist sibling Kenny jointly led a group from 1968 to 1974, recording all too infrequently but establishing themselves as one of the top echelon fraternal teams in jazz. Bassist Cecil McBee and Kennys Sphere colleague Ben Riley complete the rhythm section, contributing mightily to the overall passion and explosiveness of the performances. Barron is sometimes shortchanged as a Coltrane disciple. In his accompanying notes, critic Mark Gardner corrects this misconception by asserting Barrons advanced harmonic concepts as precursors to Tranes own. "This should not be confused with the original motion picture soundtrack to the 1988 film of the same name. The original disc only included six performances, half of which were edited due to the stringent time constraints of vinyl. This 1996 CD version not only restores all of the previously abridged performances, but also adds a trio of sides, two of which ("I Didn't Know About You: Take 1" and "Green Chimneys") are issued here for the first time. The band featured here includes: Monk (piano), Charlie Rouse (tenor sax), Ben Riley (drums), and Larry Gales (bass). This would be the final quartet Monk would assemble to record with in the studio. While far from being somber, this unit retained a mature flavor which would likewise place Monk's solos in a completely new context. In addition to the quartet sides, Straight, No Chaser contains two unaccompanied piano solos: "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea" and "This Is My Story, This Is My Song.""
