80/81 (compleet) (1980)

"Metheny's jazz credibility went way up with the release of this superb collaboration with outstanding jazz musicians that dared to be uncompromising at a time when most artists would have merely continued pursuing their commercial successes. From the disbanded Keith Jarrett American quartet came bassist Charlie Haden and tenor Dewey Redman -- who alternates with and occasionally plays alongside tenor Michael Brecker -- and Jack DeJohnette provides more combustible drumming than Metheny had ever experienced on record before. Yet Metheny's off-kilter wandering on solo electric guitar is a comfortable fit for the post-bop rhythmic crosscurrents of this music. The first of the "Two Folk Songs" is a great example of the Metheny folk-jazz fusion, with furious strummed guitar underpinning Brecker's melodic line and excursions on the outside and DeJohnette's spectacular drums." (Richard S. Ginell, Allmusic) \n"Two Folk Songs" werd door Van Kooten en De Bie midden jaren '80 als tune gebruikt bij de 'Juinen'-scenes.

Death and the flower ; Backhand (2015)

""Death And The Flower" by the Keith Jarrett Quintet (with the leader on piano, soprano and flute, tenor-saxophonist Dewey Redman, bassist Charlie Haden, drummer Paul Motian and percussionist Guilherme Franco) contains three of Jarrett's originals. The main selection, the 21-minute title track, develops logically from atmospheric sounds to intense group improvising and back again. Recorded at the same sessions as "Death And The Flower", "Backhand" features pianist Keith Jarrett's same exciting but underrated American group of the 1970s. The group (with Jarrett occasionally switching to flute and Redman to the bizarre-sounding musette) is in typically exploratory, yet often melodic form on lengthy renditions of four of Jarrett's inside/outside originals." (Scott Yanow, Allmusic; 3 sterren voor "Death...", 4,5 voor "Backhand")

Birth (1971)

"Pianist Keith Jarrett's sessions of July 1971 resulted in three LPs and the birth of his finest group: a quartet (and sometimes quintet) with tenor saxophonist Dewey Redman, bassist Charlie Haden, and drummer Paul Motian. This particular album has some eccentric moments, with Jarrett switching to soprano on the effective "Mortgage on My Soul" and making appearances on steel drum, recorder, and banjo (in addition to piano) on two adventurous pieces. Redman is featured on Chinese musette during "Spirit" (which has Haden on conga and steel drums) and also plays some clarinet in addition to his usual tenor. Not everything works, and there are some wandering moments, but the music always holds one's interest; one can easily see the potential that would soon be realized by this intriguing ensemble." The Struggle Continues

The Struggle Continues (1982)

'Album pick' bij Allmusic (4,5 uit 5 sterren): "This date has Redman fronting a standard rhythm trio: Mark Helias (b), Charles Eubanks (p), and Ed Blackwell (d) (a bandmate from Ornette Coleman days through to Old and New Dreams). Redman was versatile, as comfortable playing inside as outside, and here he does a bit of both, straying in and out of free and hard bop mode. It is one of the saxophonists most consistent and "melodic" recordings, but that doesn't mean he's any less adventurous. Perhaps those who dug hard into brilliant albums like "Tarik", "Look for the Black Star", and "Ear Of The Behearer" weren't ready to hear music that stayed so close to the bop tradition. But it was in his musical DNA and he never tried to prove otherwise. This is as fine as any of those albums, with an ensemble that understood his considerable strengths and played directly to them. Inspired and inspiring, this album is one of the gems of the ECM catalog in the '80s and a shining star in jazz, period." (Thom Jurek)

Spirituals & Dedications
CD

Spirituals & Dedications (2002)

"Spirituals & Dedications is a nod to a period in music's history when jazz reflected a strong connection to the church and its musical repertoire. This modern interpretation of the beauty and simplicity of the traditional hymn is brought to life by an eclectic group of musicians. Together they perform the music of Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Charles Mingus, as well as several original compositions by members of the collective. Saxophonist Jane Bunnett has composed a remarkable tribute to pianist Don Pullen with "Don's Light," a slow, tranquil church mode that reflects the strong connection to the natural spirituality of the piano's white keys as played by Stanley Cowell and the gospel-tinged voice of Dean Bowman. The doctrine of effects is clearly present on this recording. For those seeking a different musical perspective on traditional hymns and the relationship between spirituality and emotions or jazz and gospel, look no further." (Paula Edelstein, AllMusic)

El Juicio (The Judgement)

El Juicio (The Judgement) (1968)

Koppeling van Jarretts eerste, "Life Between The Exit Signs" (1968) aan opnamen uit dezelfde tijd, doch pas in 1975 uitgebracht ("El Juico"). Op "Life..." spelen dezelfden behalve Redman. "On "Life..." Haden rumbles, throbs, and drones, marvelously lost in bass reverie. With brushes alone, Motian's sonic palette includes frantic, flapping, prehistoric birds caught in drain pipes and 60-pound bags of sand pelting into banks of fresh snow. Jarrett uses influences from Bill Evans to Cecil Taylor. On "El Juicio", the group becomes a freewheeling version of Ornette Coleman's quartet, with Jarrett playing soprano sax, flute, and percussion as much as piano. He and Redman engage in furious duets on soprano and tenor." (Allmusic)

Fort Yawuh
