"I can hardly think of anyone else than Alexei Ogrintchouk, shouldered by Andris Nelsons at the rostrum and his own colleagues from the RCO, to be more competent for an exemplary rendition of Strauss Oboe Concerto. Indeed, the soloist must be a musical acrobat who doesnt need to breathe, at least so it seems. Listening to Ogrintchouk is enough to realize what a exceptional technician he is. But as if that isnt enough, he also convinces as far as the musical aspect is concerned. Always producing a lighthearted tone of sunshine and spielerei, naturally befitting Strauss Indian Summer, as this concerto is often described, and rightly so. There are two additional, substantial pieces, the Serenade and the Sonatina. On record they make for a useful combination. Its good to have them both here on record in a performance that leaves nothing to be wished for. This is an opportunity not to be missed. "Omdat het dit jaar precies 150 jaar is geleden dat Richard Strauss werd geboren, wil Hampson hem eren met een dwarsdoorsnede van zijn rijk gevarieerde liedoeuvre, het genre waarin Strauss zoveel van zichzelf kwijt kon. De keuze uit de ruim 200 liederen is, zoals verwacht mag worden van Hampson, weloverwogen. Naast het overbekende Zueignung en Morgen! klinken ook zelden gezongen stukken, waaronder het duistere Notturno dat tevens het hoogtepunt is van deze opname. Dit lange lied voor zangstem, viool en klavier dateert uit Strauss avantgardistische periode (rond 1900), waarin hij de grenzen van de tonaliteit opzocht en experimenteerde met impressionistische akkoorden en harmonische progressie. Mooier en treffender kan de dood niet worden uitgebeeld. De sublieme begeleiding van violist Daniel Hope en pianist Wolfram Rieger versterken de ongeëvenaarde kwaliteiten van Hampson als liedzanger die nog steeds aan rijkdom en diepgang wint. Op 29 januari 1996 nam Elly Ameling afscheid van het podium. Curieus genoeg brandde precies op dat moment het Teatro La Fenice in Venetië af, al zal geen van de aanwezigen deze rimpeling in de kosmos zijn opgevallen. Zij zong van ramp tot ramp, aldus Elly Amelings vrienden. Tijdens haar eerste concert in 1953 in Rotterdam besefte namelijk niemand dat juist op dat moment Zeeland onder water liep. Deze vijf cds tellende box met live opgenomen concerten (19571991) geeft een mooi beeld van Elly Amelings veelzijdige carrière: Franse en Duitse liederen, opera, hedendaags, Huygens, Mozart, Stravinski, Debussy, Fauré, Berg, Strauss, Mahler, Hendrik Andriessen, en nog veel meer.
