"Brahem continues his exploration of Arabic maqams, but with his three colleagues for this journey also delves deeper into Western classical music and jazz improvisation. If the music is in danger of falling into a chamber ensemble, this is cleverly avoided by use of powerful rhythmic motifs, often provided by bassist, Dave Holland. The lower register string instruments of the cello and double bass are beautifully utilised, with Lechner and Holland both displaying virtuoso techniques with strong and vibrant voices. In writing for this new ensemble, Brahem has not sought to dominate, and instead has created pieces that allow all four musicians to create freely within the confines of his written compositions. A new group and sound to explore for Brahem, as this is the first time he has featured the cello in one of his ensembles, and most agreeable it is too. It is also arguable that "After The Last Sky" is also the more satisfying and complete set, as fine as "Blue Maqams" is." (Jazz Views)
"Anouar Brahem, meester op de ûd (Arabische luit), is een schoolvoorbeeld van hoe je traditionele muziek eigentijds maakt. Hij maakt al bijna 20 jaar prachtige albums voor het prestigieuze ECM, zoals "Le Voyage De Sahar" (2006) en "Souvenance" (2015), dat hij schreef n.a.v. de politieke omwentelingen in zijn geboorteland Tunesië. Op "Blue Maqams" slaat hij nadrukkelijk een brug tussen het Arabische toonstelsel (de maqam) en de jazz vandaar de titel. "As fierce and fiery as any trumpet and flügelhorn stylist yet capable of stirring lyricism, Harry Beckett was an integral part of Britain's jazz community following his arrival from Barbados in 1954 when he was 19 until his death in 2010. Rightly dubbed a jazzman, Beckett was nonetheless a diverse player eager to contribute to many musical scenarios. During the '90s, Beckett contributed to some iconic recordings. That's his trumpet break on the single "Erzulie" from Jah Wobble's Invaders of the Heart's Rising Above Bedlam. He also released his own Passion & Possession for ITM in 1991, an important series of duet recordings with pianists Django Bates, Keith Tippett, and Joachim Kuhn. The pianists, Pine, bassist Jean-Francois Jenny Clark, and Jarvis all appeared on Beckett's 1992 West Wind date, Les Jardins Du Casino." (Allmusic)
